  1. Not getting enough sleep is harmful to health and learning. Here are a few tips on how to get adequate sleep.
    • Sleep in a quiet, dark, and relaxing environment, which is neither too hot nor too cold.
    • Avoid consuming any caffeine at least 8 hours before bedtime.
    • Avoid strenuous physical activity within a few hours of bedtime.
    • Avoid large and heavy meals before bedtime.
    • Make your bed comfortable and use it only for sleeping and not for other activities, such as reading, watching television, or listening to music.
    • Remove all television remote controls, computers, and other electronics from the bedroom.

  2. If I was writing a magazine article titled "The Five Most Important Steps to Maintaining Your Good Health," these would be my 5 steps.
    1. Do not abuse alcohol, drink in moderation, and do not binge drink.
    2. Get enough sleep, around eight hours per night.
    3. Eat right and exercise right.
    4. Manage your stress right, practice relaxation techniques.
    5. Do not fall into the pressure of drugs, legal or not. Whether it is tobacco or anything else, it severely damages your health and takes years from your life.

  3. One of the biggest hurdles to overcome in starting any form of nutrition plan or exercise routine is starting. It is very easy to list all the reasons why an individual does not want to start, such as I am too tired, I do not have enough time, it will not help much anyway, and the good old I just do not care enough. Each of these reasons has significant meaning to the individual using them, but that does not help them. There is the catch-22 of I am too tired to exercise but if I did exercise I would not be so tired. That has hindered the beginning of many exercise efforts, including mine. For many people it is simply easier to eat poorly, rather than take the time to discover what foods would be good for them. It can also be costly to eat healthy, but I have found I do not eat as much when I a truly focused on my diet. This has shown me how to manage my food budget and get the most for my money. If I am being honest, life can get in the way of being healthy and that has led to the drastic increase of obesity and health related medical issues. For those who just do not care, there is a real fear of a major medical issue happening before that changes and personal health becomes a priority. The hope is that it does not kill that person first, as the family will be the ones who truly will suffer then. That is laziness that is rooted in being selfish.

  5. I watched the video called how to make stress your friend. I’m going to talk about the study I learn in the video they tract 30,000 adults in the United States for 8 years they asked them how much stress in the last year they had and they also ask do you believe if stress is harmful for your health. People who had a lot of stress had a 43% of death 182,000 death not from stress but from people who believe that stress is harmful for your health. The video also talked about when you changes your mind about stress you can also changes your body about stress when you have a pounding hart is appearing you for action if you are breathing heavily there is more oxygen going to your brain. The one thing that I thought was interesting is that stress can make you socials there is a hormone called oxytocin it’s also called the cuddle hormone because when you huge someone it is release oxytocin helps you get a close relationship with people like your family and friends and it also helps you care about your family and friends. Oxytocin is a stress hormone your pituitary gland is the stuff out as part of the stress response is as much a part of your stress makes your hart pound it is motivating you to seek support and tell people how you feel and with the oxytocin it shows you when your friends and family are hurting and it also wants you to be around people that care about your feelings it also strength your heart how you think about stress matters.

  6. Knowing this information, why do people continue to smoke, overeat, take illegal drugs, miss out on sleep or practice unsafe sex?

People continue to do or participate in these things because we are only human and we make mistakes. Every individual is different and have reasons for their bad habits and or guilty pleasures. It does not mean that they are good ones nevertheless it does not stop them from doing them. People overreact because they either have no self control or they are letting out bottled emotions or maybe even they don't know any better. People smoke and do drugs because it makes them feel better or because of peer pressure. We have all felt it and have been tempted at one point or another some of just slip up while other are able to say no. Smoking helps distress some people that doesn't make it right but it is their way of coping. Sex can be another way of dealing with stress. I am not sure why people have unprotected sex, maybe they want to feel reckless or are just too caught up in the moment, I don't know. As for illegal drugs some people get caught up in the wrong crowd and or have no way to cope with their life that may or may not be hard. Either way for any of these situations we can not know every persons logic behind it whether it be just or just simply irresponsible. My only suggestion is that we respect the fact that they are human and make mistakes and try our best to help them.

  7. There are a number of actions that I could take in order to improve my health as such I have narrowed down my options and chosen three things to do that will likely improve my health and longevity. The first thing I will try to improve on is my sleeping habits. Currently when I sleep is incredibly erratic and I often go extended periods without sleep. This is most certainly going to have a negative effect on my health if I let it continue, so I will put a stop to it in the near future. I will accomplish this by cutting off any use of computer/television past a certain hour so that I do not become distracted as well as getting ready for bed a good half hour before I intend to sleep. Secondly I will cut back on the red meat. Currently a good portion of my diet is occupied by meat, and while it is tasty it has caused my diet to be rather unbalanced. I intend to remedy this by looking into substitutes for the various meat products I enjoy and then trying to incorporate them into my daily meals. Lastly I will completely stop drinking various soda products. While I am not drinking large amounts of soda every day it is one of my more indulged in guilty pleasures, and likely one of the more damaging ones. While it will be difficult to immediately stop drinking these tasty beverages I believe that I will be successful in my attempt to remove them from my diet. If I can manage to accomplish these three goals I believe that my health will improve by a large margin and following suit my life expectancy will also increase.

  8. Illegal drug use is addictive and limits success. An estimated 20.4 million people in the United States used some kind of illicit drug in the past 30 days, according to the latest government statistics. About 8.3 percent of all persons age 12 and over are involved in use of illegal drugs or the nonmedical use of prescription drugs. This good news is that according to the 2006 NSDUH findings, illicit drug use rates have remained stable since 2002 and the use of some drugs has declined. The survey has shown an alarming increase in the abuse of prescription-type psychotherapeutic drugs though. I am an ex-addict. I used cocaine and meth on and off for 18 years. I feel like I literally wasted so much of my life being stuck in my addiction. There is not any illegal drug that will give you motivation consistently and help you to become successful. The sad reality is that most people that are in my situation will not get clean and stay that way. I have heard stories about people that hadn't used in years and went back to it at some point. I am happy to say that I have been clean for almost 16 years. I have had to dig myself out of a pretty big hole that I was in from my life style, but I took it a little at a time and now I am finally able to work one job and go to school. I had to rebuild my relationships, my credit and my whole life. It was worth every bit of work that I put into all of those things and even though I can't look into the future I know for sure that I will never go back there. Some day I want to help others that are going through the same things that I went through.

  9. I feel like people still continue to partake in things that they already know are not healthy for them because a lot of these times the things people do for example over eating, drugs, drinking, etc. makes a person feel good and becomes comfort. Even though people know the consequences it is a quick fix and makes them feel better at that moment of time and very quick. So it just really makes it a lot easier that taking steps in controlling stress and taking healthy routes to it. Americans on average I believe would always go the easy route until they realize it is the wrong route and for success it takes struggle and getting yourself uncomfortable sometimes to make changes.

  10. Some things that I do everyday to maintain good health is to be sure to not eat more than I burn off in a day. Make sure to always eat fruit and vegetables with every meal. I carry around a gallon of water with me everyday and only drink water when you have it with you it helps you to not want to grab a soda or juice which has a lot of sugar that as we read is very bad for you. I also stick to a strict workout plan and make sure I get some kind of hard physical activity along with one day of rest. I try to make sure to get between 5-8 hour of sleep a night which always makes me feel so much better and ready in the morning. The most important is I love myself and make sure to stay stress free and remember everything is under control and all you can do is take the best steps necessary for you to live a good life and if you don't in the end you will fail yourself.

  11. One out of three Americans is overweight or obese:

A few chapters back at the beginning of the semester we had a habit section, where we had a to choose a habit to do for ten days to see if it would stick. Luckily I choose having a healthier life style by eating healthy and exercising 6 times a week for one to two hours a day. I have lost about ten pounds since I started this habit and it has been awesome from there on out. I can tell I have way more energy throughout the day, I’m happier, and I am way more focused in class! It is true when they say " you are what you eat" because it you eat unhealthy food all the time your going to become over weight and feel very unhealthy all together. Thus putting into effect many Americans are overweight because they do not eat a well balance meals or exercise three to five times per week for one to two hours a day doing aerobic exercise.

  12. There are many things people can do that will improve their health and help them live longer but here are five important things to know about your health. Smoking not only causes cancer but it also causes many other diseases and can be very harmful to other people who are around you. Smoking can reduce your life expectancy by 15 years. Being obese is nothing to be ashamed of because 1 out of every 3 Americans is obese but you can start to eat healthier, do exercises, and limit your calorie intake to lose weight which will help you in the long run by reducing many health problems associated with obesity. We all need it and sleep is by far one of the most important things you can do every night because getting enough sleep and getting good quality sleep will improve your health and reduce health risks. Getting enough sleep is not the only thing you can do. You can get better quality sleep by not having a large meal before bed and by not using your electronics in bed or before bed. Practicing safe sex is also important because you can contract sexually transmitted diseases if you do not watch yourself. Sexually transmitted diseases can lower the years you live. I have already thought about my own health and I am going to improve my health by eating better, exercising more, getting better quality sleep, and thinking about stress differently to help me and not kill me. Stress can be used to motivate me instead of putting me in a bad mood.

  13. I currently sleep about 8 hours a day, I have a schedule and I'm usually in bed before 10 so i can maintain a good health, by sleeping a total of 8 hours per day. I understand that having a good amour of sleep promotes and establishes the best performances in school. One of the things I need to do, is going to bed at 9, so i am able to wake up an hour earlier, to get in a good workout, which I believe will also energizes me for the day.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Three things I can improve on:
    1. Making sure I go to bed on time- Getting to bed earlier, so the next day I will be energize, and being able to wake up not tired the next day
    2. Stop drinking Soda- I do like having a soda here and there, but sometimes I know I shouldn't, because then I feel like I am unable to sleep well at night.
    3. Eating smaller portions- This is a big thing for me, portions is number one. Don't eat too little but don't eat too much where you feel like you are going to explode. Make sure you always eat portions cause that helps when dieting.

  15. Our world is full of foods and habits that are considered to harmful to us. Many times we know something is harmful to us if we deal with it such as drugs or smoking but we keep on doing it without caring about the consequences. One of the most factors that make us, the people keep on taking these bad things is the environment that we live in. The environment in here is the people that we deal with everyday and the also the media that aids on what to do in our daily life. Many of our friends will tell, "Hey dude, You gotta smoke, this is the best, everybody smoke it!", or some other times "If you don't smoke, you're not a man". When we have a friend like that telling that this what makes us "cool" we fall into that it is okay to smoke it and our health can be fixed later. As in the media, many of the movies that come out are about drinking and smoking illegal drugs. The person who watches these movies or shows will fall into the idea that what those are doing in this movie is not that bad and I have to do it if i want to be like them. Now of course not everybody falls into these ideas, but still some fall and their healthy life goes down. Sometimes we don't get enough sleep as well. This issue occurred due to stress that we have or we just decide not to sleep. we can solve this issue by going to bed early and force ourselves into sleep. Our health is important and we can take a good care of it if we exercising and eating helathy.

  16. Not getting enough sleep is harmful to health and learning.

I always believe that sleeping an enough hours makes a lot of things better for me. Some times when I sleep late and wake early makes my whole day get bad. I always try to sleep early so I can help works better. Sleeping 8 hours is required for me when I go to work and also especially college. Doing home works late is one the issues I face which is increase the stress for me and I don't get to sleep enough hours. For the recent years I have maintained my school and work schedule and I am having the best hours of sleep which is a lot of things are going well as how I feel. What I always do for now, I always go to the bed early so I can be more stronger the next day. This thing have worked a lot better for me and I believe that if I don't sleep enough hours, then I am pretty sure that my next day would be horrible. I engorge any one goes to school and work to sleep at least 7 hours a day so they won't face any stress issues at school or work during the next day.

  17. Not sleeping enough hours causes a person to be not paying attention to the next day. People can’t get enough hours of sleep is because sometimes they have to work more or they have kids that needs to be taken care of. A person must sleep minimum and maximum of seven to nine hours a day average is eight hours. That’s what everyone sees them self-doing better on hours of sleeping, I see that too because I feel relaxed if I get eight hours of sleep a day and that refreshes my mind and make me feel that I am getting my power again and makes me pay attention more than I get less hours of sleep. So what I do is I recommend everyone to sleep for eight hours a day so that can keep their body healthier and try to pay attention more than getting less hours. I know sometimes it’s hard for some people to get enough hours but that’s recommended and should be taken care of; because the human brain need the power from resting enough so that the person can do well on the next day and that’s how it supposed to be done and that’s the exact way.

  18. One can just walk out there door to see that Americans are overweight. Why are American in this last decade so over weight? Doctors from Harvard University have try to find the answer to this question but there is not a really a direct answer. Many people in the United States have try everything to lose weight. A person can just want to get back to their shape that they were once before or a shape that they dream of becoming. There are people that have try to lose weight for many years and they just give up and go get liposuction. This is what happen to one women that was sitting in the exam room Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond. It is so hard for me to think that this is what American are doing. It is crazy. American we need to open are eyes and see that betting overweight in this last 2 to 3 decade is not right. Eat healthier, exercise, tell yourself that I can and I will lose weight for me and my family. Get your friends together and go out and exercise. I want this statistic to go away “One out of three Americans [are] overweight or obese. I want this to change. 19. One out of three americans is over weight or obese. Why do we choose to eat so much that it causes us to gain weight and have heart issues? There are many causes to people becoming over weight. One issue could be that they are depressed and tend to eat over their problems. There are many weight loss solutions but it is hard for people to commit to changing their daily eating habits and styles. Sometimes it is not always the individuals fault. Maybe their parents were over weight and obese so they were shown bad eating habits due to the way their parents ate. Exercise is also a good way to lose weight. Try to play a sport you like. I have been playing soccer my whole life and I have never been out of my BMI radius of being unhealthy. We need to change the increasing number of people who are over weight and do not realize that there is something wrong with being unhealthy like that. From personal experience, there are also phones apps to calculate how many calories you are supposed to in take a day due to your body weight and height which would really help maintain your weight.

  20. Not getting enough sleep is harmful to your health. Without the rest your body needs you are just going to feel tired. That cant help with school because you are not fully focused and can not pay attention. People need an average of 8 hours of sleep per night. I usually get about 7 or 8 hours of sleep per night, whenever I stay up late and go to bed late I always wake up early and feel like I need more sleep. With the right amount of rest you can feel your more focused and alert to things.

  22. I watched How to Make Stress Your Friend.
This video really helps us to know about stress and all. It tells us that it doesn’t really matter how much stress you have. The woman is trying to tell us that if you believe that stress does not hurt you and it isn’t harmful, you will live longer. Even if you are full of stress, as long as you believe that, you will not die as easily! She found out that scientists were interviewing people to find out more about stress. She said that there is something in your body called oxytocin. It is a cuddle hormone. This thing helps you take out your stress symptoms. It helps your body from being too stressed out. It helps you not to die quickly. The main thing the woman was trying to say was that if you make stress you friend, you would not die of stress. You will have a higher percentage of living then if you make stress your enemy! We should make it our friend. Many people who thought of stress as their enemy died, quickly. Others, who were full of stress and didn’t think f it as a harmful thing, didn’t die so quickly! All we have to do is not think of stress as you enemy, but as your friend!

  24. Knowing this information, why do people continue to smoke, overeat, take illegal drugs, miss out on sleep or practice unsafe sex?

Some people continue to do these things even regardless of knowing that it could possibly harm them in certain ways because they may be depressed or have personal issues in their lives, and these things can ease the pain. Many people look to drugs and alcohol as an escape from all the pain and problems that they face in their lives. Sometimes others fall into these things because of peer pressure. When you see all your friends doing these things, they may persuade you to join them or you may feel yourself that you will not fit in with your friends unless you start to do these things too. Regardless of the situation, it is sad to see people you know, especially ones who are close to you fall into these kind of things. It is important that they know how they are affecting their lives physically and mentally.

people who continue to do those bad habits is because of their indifference. It could be that they are depressed of themselves that they aren’t successful in their lives or they are causing depression to people around them. It may also be that people are careless toward them and they want to grab certain people’s attention so they start harming themselves. Which is absolutely wrong, because grabbing people’s attention lays on being successful.

  27. People still engage in unhealthy habits. knowing how bad they are for there health because they like to let themselves think that nothing bad will happen to them. People underestimate the affects that it will have on them. They also think that they will not be apart of the percentage that has had dramatic affects by engaging in the unhealthy habits. On the other hand, everyone has a reason for their bad habits. Everyone also has a reason for their bad habits. Stress sometimes overcomes someone and a lot of stuff just do not become important anymore, including their health. They will start to smoke or drink or engage in unsafe sex to get their mind off all the problems going on in their lives. Some can be depressed and would not think twice about loosing years off their life or think twice about the bad affect that come from the bad habits. People do drugs or drink to escape from all their problems. “Getting high” or drinking to get drunk is just a switch for some people to forget all the bad in their lives, not knowing that the bad is still their and they are not taking care of it the right way.

I think that people still do these things for many reasons. To some it may be an escape from whatever issues they are dealing with or trying to avoid. For others, it could be that they think bad things happen to other people but not to them. Some people just don't consider the consequences. For example, with eating; people think the food tastes good, so they do not want to stop eating it.

  30. I decided to watch the Ted Talks video by Jamie Oliver: Teach Every Child about Food. Jamie is not a doctor but a chef. When he opens his segment he said in the next 18 minutes 4 people will be dead. The cause? Obesity. The United States is one of the unhealthiest countries. This is the first time that children will have a shorter life than their parents by about 20 years. The number one cause of death is heart disease. Obesity is a preventable disease and it starts with the parents and in the homes. As parents we need to encourage our children to stay active and eat right. In turn we need to be that example for our children. Most of us were brought into this world as healthy children however, the growth of fast food chains and technology has made us fatter and lazier than ever before. As of now Americans spend 150 billion dollars a year on health care and that number is expected to double. One thing I am grateful for is my health. I may not have the house, the money, the cars, and the clothes but I am still healthy. I can prolong my life and reduce the risk of cancer if I eat well and exercise. WE need to teach our children the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and also show them the ugly side of not maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

  31. To stay in a healthy state it is important to get the required amount of sleep each night, to eat the right foods, but not right before you are about to go to sleep for the night, and to get some type of daily exercise to lose those extra lingering calories that are no good. Have a good time everyone in awhile to break up stress patterns. Do things that keep yourself in a positive state of mind. Meditation also helps break up constant worry. Whether it be about school or work. Surround yourself with beings who can only add to your greatness and so fourth.

    • Avoid smoking to expand your life
    • Try to avoid over eating, Proportion yourself
    • Illegal drug use is addictive and can lead to unsuccessful encounters in life.
    • Avoid not getting sleep. Recommended amount if time is 8 hours per night.
    • Practice safe sex to avoid harmful diseases and STD's. Think ahead and be smart
