Orientation August 18-24

Hello students and welcome to Counseling 120, College and Career Success! Take a look at my video introduction above.  Please make 2 postings this week.  For the first posting, introduce yourself by telling us about your interests, hobbies and what is important in your life and maybe share a photo or video of yourself. As your second posting, tell us about your educational journey, why you are taking this class and your goals and dreams for the future. You can also comment on other students' postings.

This class is especially useful for those of you who want to understand yourself better and choose a major and career that matches your gifts and talents. The class also meets a general education requirement for transfer to state universities. If this is your first class in college, you are off to a good start. If you are a continuing student, there are some great benefits. You will become familiar with some new learning tools that will make your future education easier.

Since the course is online, you can do the work anytime or any place during the week. For best results, be sure to set aside time for working on this class each week and not wait until the last minute to do the work. I look forward to working with all of you this semester.

Marsha Fralick’s Introduction
Here is an example of a 100 word introduction:

I am your professor for Counseling 120. I retired from Cuyamaca College where I worked from 1978-2007 as a counselor and instructor for this course. I play many roles in life. I am a Grandmother with 2 young granddaughters. I enjoy taking care of them frequently and watching them grow. My own children are grown up and have their own careers and homes. I have my own business and work with colleges across the country in training faculty to teach college success courses.  I am also the author of your textbook.  In my leisure time I enjoy traveling and being active.  I traveled to the Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Russia and Norway over the summer. It an opportunity to see part of the world I had never seen before.

Marsha Fralick’s Educational Journey

Here is an example of a 100 word posting.

I attended a small country high school in New Mexico and was a good student. When I went to the University of New Mexico, I found that it was a whole new world and I was not prepared for it. I struggled to be successful in college and had to learn how to listen to lectures, take notes and prepare for exams. I also had uncertain career goals. When I started working at a college, I remembered those years that I struggled and decided to invent a course that would help students to be successful. It has been a fun and rewarding adventure for the last 35 years.

  1. Hello my name is Esther Vineyard I am 19 years old. This fall will be my first year of college. Which I am excited and nervous for. I am interested in artistic things such as music, art, and literature. I would draw a lot during my first few years of high school. Though more recently I find my free time going to friends and my boyfriend. My friends and family are the most important things in my life since we have been there for each other through the hard times. Continuing my education is also very important to me! I value knowledge and feel it is valuable for not only an individual but for society as well. I am taking this class to get a better idea of what type of career would be good for me. I would like to have a career that I am not only good in but is also enjoyable for me. I am excited for the possibility this class has to offer.

My family and friends mean everything they continuously support me in everything i do. I currently live with my parents, little sister, and boyfriend. My hobbies are going to the desert and driving my razor, going to the river, relaxing on the beach, and going on a new hike every week if I can. This class seems to be exactly what i need, because i am self sufficient and I live in Ramona so it will save me a lot of gas and travel time.

  5. It is great to see that students are already introducing themselves on the blog before school begins. I'm sure that with your enthusiasm and willingness to get started, you will be successful in this course. Remember to do 2 postings by the end of the first week of school as in my examples above: 100 word introduction, 100 word educational journey. You can comment on other students' postings as well. It is great to meet you. I am looking forward to working with you this semester.

    1. Hi there. I figured out how to change the name on my blogs to my actual name instead of my email. Sorry if there was any confusion about who I was. The 2 blogs with schabo as the name are mine.

      Thanks,
      Stephanie Schabarum

  6. My name is Stephanie. I am 52 years old and have never been to college. I work full time running a small reprographics business in El Cajon. I have been at my job for 14 years and hope to one day own the company. It is unlikely that I will be changing careers in the future but I am taking this class to help me navigate through college. Things have changed a lot since I have been to school. I have a 23 year old son that is currently serving his 6th year in the US Coast Guard. I live with my boyfriend and my 2 dogs. I thought about going back to school for along time and I intend on taking full advantage of this opportunity.

  7. Hi, my name is Tanya Petras. I am 18 years old and this is my first semester at Cuyamaca. I live with my parents, older sister, older brother, and younger sister. I don't currently have a job anymore but I’m in the process of trying to get hired at a bank. A few of my hobbies include reading, watching television, going to the beach, and just having a great time with my friends. I didn’t get to travel anywhere too far this summer, but I did enjoy a weekend in Vegas. I’m not sure what I want to major in.

  8. I graduated from high school in June and obviously am now starting college. I was a good student in high school and had good grades because I enjoyed getting an education. I'm undecided on what I want to major in, but most of the careers I think about are in the medical field. I just know that I want to do something that I will enjoy doing for the rest of my life and not wake up every morning dreading work. I hope this class can help me finally decide on what I want to do with the rest of my life.

When I was in high school I had average grades.I Graduated June 4,2013 I wasn't even going to college because I thought I could find a job but I couldn't find one and I realize if I want a nice paying job I should go to college and I had my family and friends telling me the same thing. I'm take this cores because I want to learn more about starting my own business and I'm hoping this class can help me stat a business. My goal in the future is to be successful in my own doggie daycare.

  10. Hello my name is Michelle, I'm 19 years old and I just graduated from high school. I love being with my family because they mean the world to me. I just recently became an aunty and its honestly the best feeling in the world. I'm so excited to start my career in nursing because I enjoy helping others. I'm really looking forward to taking this online class that will help me towards my next years as a college student. I'm a down to earth person who enjoys the outdoors and the company of my closest friends. I believe work should be something you enjoy rather than doing something for a paycheck, and that's why I chose the medical field. The work is never ending and gives you the satisfaction of knowing you can always help others.

  11. Beginning in school I did not do so well, but I do believe that was because I was not motivated nor did I have the right kind of teacher. Once I entered high school I realized just how important a person's education was with the help of my brother. Grades could impact a student's future and I took that into mind. I did well in most subject with the exceptions of Math and some Science though I enjoyed English and History. One of my favorite subjects was Psychology. After high school I decided to continue my academic career so whatever field of work I decided to go into I would do well in. I thought this class would be good to point me in the right direction for career paths that would suit me as an individual. My goal by the end of a few years of college is to be on a set path for a career I know will challenge me but one that I will also enjoy.

  12. School has never came easy to me but it was never a struggle like it may be for some. College was always a thought but never something I was fully comfortable with, but with the help and push of my older sister whom is an SDSU alumni I knew it was something that I needed to reach my full potential in life. High school wasn't my best memory nor was I a 4.0 student but I did put effort into my work and made sure I did the best I could possibly do. I hope to accomplish finishing junior college with the best possible grades and knowledge in order to transfer to SDSU where I can start my path to become a nurse. After receiving my nursing degree I hope to work in the field up to four years and go to attend graduate school where I could potentially receive my masters and be able to become a plastic surgeon or specialize in children's medicine.

  13. Hi, my name is Brianna Medellin. I am 18 years old. I graduated from Monte Vista high school in June. I am very nervous for school to start. This will be my first semester at Cuyamaca. I will be a full-time student also working and playing a college sport and I am hoping i can handle it. I have a twin brother attending Cuyamaca as well and three half-sisters. My hobby is playing soccer and I am currently playing soccer for the Cuyamaca Coyotes!woohoo! I am very outgoing and athletic. I would love to major in dentistry because teeth have an interest on me.

  14. Hello, my name is Kevin. Although that is not my legal name just yet, (for now it's Cassandra) it is the name that I go by to all of my friends, family, teachers, coworkers, and so on. It has been this way for a little over seven years now. Yes you heard right, I am one of the few transgender students here at Cuyamaca College and I'm quite proud to say that. This is my fourth semester here, and I am 20 years young. I am very excited to begin this class because counseling is one of my dream professions and the more I learn about it, the better the odds become that I fall into the path of helping people learn about themselves as my career.

  15. My educational journey is what I'd like to call "Ehhh." Not because of its been difficult, but because we've all had those times in school where we just want to give up and be lazy about the work. And believe me, I've had plenty of those in highscool. But, becoming a college student after graduating is really upside down from that, at least to me. At Granite Hills High School (or any high school), it was almost okay for students to be lazy because of the No Student Left Behind rule. But here at Cuyamaca I have a goal like most of you; I strive to be not only successful, but also to overcome challenges that others have not accomplished. The fact that that high school rule does not apply in grown up land is almost exhilarating and also terrifying, resulting in almost an adrenaline induced need for me to be the best that I can be.

  16. My college educational journey has been great. High school though not so much. Throughout high school my only goal was to graduate, i always had the mind set that " school wasn't for me". When i enrolled in my first semester of college and started it was a whole new world. I now actually enjoy college knowing that each class I complete I am that much closer to graduating and being able to have a profession I really want! My major is nursing. I plan on finishing up my general ed at grossmont/cuyamaca and then transferring to SDSU to get my Bachelors of Science in Nursing.

  17. Hello everyone, my name is Ed and I am 47 years old. I am married with five children, three girls and two boys. I was born and raised in Brentwood, TN, outside of Nashville. I joined the Navy in 1986, and served 21 years. I spent time on both coasts and visited countries all over the world, including Antarctica where I have 14 days at the South Pole. I work as the repair supervisor for power wheelchairs; this is a good job but not the career I am hoping for. I do not have much free time with a large family and a full class load.

  18. I graduated in 1985 from Brentwood High School in Brentwood, TN. My focus was auto-mechanics and I attended a vocational school for the majority of my school day. I excelled in that area, but my common core grades were average at best. College was not an option when I was 18. I began taking college classes when I was in the Navy and found the journey to be something I truly enjoyed. I enjoy the challenge of school and enjoy pushing myself to do the best I can. I am looking forward to this semester and interacting with classmates to enhance the learning environment.

  19. My educational journey is to become my dream profession which is a dentist or a dental assistant. My goal is to pass all of my general education classes at Cuyamaca and transfer to a four year like SDSU where I can begin my path. I am taking this class to learn more about myself and to become more successful in my life. I honestly dislike the fact of going to school, even though in high school i was an honor roll student, but I know that if I want to be financially stable with a family to take care of it is needed. I am excited to see where life takes me!

  20. I graduated from High School in 1980. I was a good student but instead of going to college I went to work full time and my life took a very different direction. I worked in the insurance industry for many years, as well as waitressing and bartending. I manage a small business in El Cajon right now. My plan is to eventually own this business. I feel like I missed an important part of my life by not going to college. I realize that my experience is going to be very different than had I gone when I was much younger but I am excited to be here. I have not picked a major and don't even really have an education plan yet. I will figure all of this out this year. I would like to transfer to SDSU in the future.

  21. Hey guys! My name's Samantha. I am 19 years old and am a former Cuyamaca Women's soccer player. I was born and raised in San Diego but cannot wait to leave; I have always wanted to live and go to school in Savanna, GA. I have an older sister who is a hairstylist which is great because I change my hair color about once a month. I currently work at an elementary school but recently got EMT certified. As much as I love children, I am so looking forward to switching jobs soon and starting my medical career. I am extremely active and am always outside in my spare time. I am super stoked for this semester because it means I am just that much closer to being done!

  22. School has always come easily to me so when I graduated from Steele Canyon High School in 2012 with a 4.0 GPA and had expected to coast through college and transfer out of Grossmont/Cuyamaca within 2 years. Though I have managed to maintain good grades in my first 2 years I have realized how difficult college can really be and earned my first "C"... ever. Since I was 5 I knew I was going to be in the medical field when I grew up. I have always dreamed of being a surgeon, but in the past year I have changed my mind multiple times. As I grew up and matured more I began to realize that having a family and time to spend with them was more important to me than money and completing 10 years of school. So I as of this year I am now on the path to be an ER or Neonatal Nurse and am super excited! Though I have always wanted to go to Armstrong State University in Savanna and was accepted for the Fall '14 semester I have decided to stay at Grossmont and Cuyamaca for a little longer and just get my Associates in Nursing to begin with so I can get started in my career and just upgrade my degree while I work. My end goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner and help open a private practice.

  24. My name is Ana, I am 25 years old. This semester marks a year of my return to college after a “break” from high school. I am originally from San Diego and I moved back two years ago. I lived in Las Vegas throughout middle school and high school. It feels great to be home I’ve never been happier. Some of my hobbies include reading, traveling, and dining out. I go to school and work full time at a bank as a teller. I am the kind of person who never gets bored. I am always busy and when I have downtime I have learned to appreciate it.

  25. I graduated from high school in Las Vegas, in 2006. After high school I attempted to attend college and I lacked focus and life got in the way. I was dropping and failing classes left and right. I started working and my main focus became to make money, get a car and move out of my mom’s house. I eventually stopped going to school and I focused on work. I worked my way up to a management position at a bank. I tried management for almost a year and decided to demote myself to a teller and go back to school. Going back to school this time around has been a great experience. I feel as though I appreciate the value of an education. I am more focused that I have ever been. I have been attending Grossmont/Cuyamaca for about a year now. I am majoring in English and planning to transfer to SDSU.

  26. Hello, Im Sophia Bailey. I started high school at Valahala and ended up graduating later at Grossmont. I just recentlty tunred 20 on May 27th, which makes me a Gemini! This will be my third semester attending Cuyamaca(part time). I work in La Jolla right now as an office assisant to a property management office. Its a nice job to experience, but I have lived in El Cajon for a long time and the commuting time and gas to La Jolla is horrrible. I also dont enjoy sitting in an office all day. So I will soon be looking for a new job. As I mentioned, I've lived in El Cajon for a long time, born and raised in SD. Hoping that I can move somewhere with seasons, rain and snow. As far as hobbies, I enjoy anything outdoors, from going to the beach, hiking and running.

  27. As far as my educational journey..School has never being my strong suit. I've always struggled. I started at Valhalla, as mentioned and later decided if I wanted to ever graduate I had to do alternative schooling. I moved to Grossmont High School to a program they have called the Pheonix program. It allowed me to fully focus on my classes. I still graduated a year late, but I did it! This class is one I have wanted to take for a while. I still have no major, or a pretty good idea of what I want to do with my life. Hopefully this class will give me some insight on that.

  28. My name is Michael Robinson, I am 19 years old at the moment and am soon turning 20. I am entering my first year of college following a small break I took after high school. My number one pass time would have to be reading fantasy novels, my current favorite is The Wheel of Time series written by the late Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. Though I am not working at the moment this does not mean I simply laze around reading, I often help around the house either taking care of our two horses or even the children if need be. I look forward to working with everyone and hope that we can all get along well.

  29. My name is Hunter Steinmann; I am 21 years old and a continuing student here at Cuyamaca to finish up the last few classes that I need. I was born in Texas but moved out to San Diego when my father was transferred to Naval Air Station North Island. Even though I have lived out here for a long time, I travel back as often as I can to visit all my grandparents and relatives. I am very proud of where I come from. My family, friends and girlfriend of over four years now are all more important that anything else in my life. I love doing anything outdoors going to the desert and off-roading every chance I get.

  30. I graduated from Grossmont High School in June of 2011, got my first job working for at Discount Tire Co. in August, and started my first year of college at Grossmont/Cuyamaca two weeks later. After three long years at Discount and studying here, I was accepted into UCSD and will start to take classes there in October. Since I love welding and fabrication, I chose to pursue a Structural Engineering degree. This semester I will be taking the last few math and science classes that I need and then I will be at UCSD full time just taking my upper division classes for my major.

  32. Hello, my name is Selma Azabo. I am 18 years old and I just graduated from Valhalla High School this past June. I live with my parents, two sisters, and a baby brother. I love my family and friends and love to spend as much time as I can with them just hanging out, going to the beach, or going out to dinner. My baby brother is two years old and I just love playing with him. I also love to travel and can't wait to finish my education so I can travel. I would love to visit Santorini, Greece.

  33. As I mentioned I just graduated from Valhalla High School and I haven't completely decided what I want to major in or work as in the future. I need to look into each major and think of what I would love working as in the future. I want to enjoy going to work. My major in currently business, but lately I've been wanting to major in nursing. I know I want to get at least a bachelors degree, but I'm not sure in what I'd like to get it yet. That's why I enrolled into this class early on, and also because I need it to graduate and further my education. This class will hopefully help me find out what I would like to do for the rest of my life.

  34. Hello all – my name is Ivy Robinson, I am an 18 year old first time college student. I am the fourth born of six children; growing up with two younger brothers has given me a love for working with children; and having five siblings and wonderful parents has taught me what it means to find friendship in family. As a result, maintaining and cherishing these relationships is very important to me. One of my most consistent hobbies formed almost eight years ago when my elementary school decided there would be band class once a week. I joined band then, which soon became the highlight of my week, and have played the clarinet since! While I did take a hiatus my senior year from playing with ensembles, I can never go too long without practice-playing simply makes my heart too happy. I also enjoy occasionally watching anime/reading manga, and I have a burning love for the novel Jane Eyre. I look forward to getting to know everyone!

  37. When I was in fourth grade I wanted to be a special education teacher and it still has not change. When I was in eighth grade one of my teacher gave me a glass apple and said “I will only give you this apple if you become a teacher.” I still have this apple today, and to me it symbolize to never give up on your dreams. In high school I work with the special education students as a peer tutor. Also, one of my teacher told me that if she does not see me as a teacher one day, she has not done her job right. Four years ago I came to Cuyamaca College to live my dreams. I am taking this class because it sound interesting. I have change my major a couple of time but I still wanted to be a teacher. I love teaching people new things. Today, I am a special education aid at my old middle school; I am a liberal studies and a child development major. In about two years I am going to be transfer to San Diego State to get my teacher degree.

  42. I recently graduated from El Capitan High School, where my academic career was, in my opinion, very limited and unrewarding until I joined an AP class my junior year. In that class I discovered that I very much enjoy learning, and that was reinforced by the AP classes I took senior year as well; I found that I enjoyed participating in class discussions and I was eager to come to class each day and leave with a new bit of knowledge. I hope that by taking this class my first semester of college, I won't waste fundamental time in the future taking classes and using methods/habits that I will discover later simply don't "agree" with me.

I am a little bit nervous about where to go from here but hopefully this class will open my eyes to what the next step I need to take is. As I said in my introduction I hope that we can all get along well and perhaps even grow together as people.

  44. Hi everyone! My name is Alysha Poteet. I graduated in 2007 from Christian High School. I am 25 years old and have an amazing 5-year-old son named Gabriel. I am grateful in particular to my son because he has given me the motivation to start school and so I can succeed in life and provide him with all of the things he deserves. I am extremely passionate about working with animals, specifically rescues. I have a 3-year-old Pit Bull names Cali, who is a complete goofball and attention hog. I spent three years working at the San Diego Rescue Mission, a homeless shelter in downtown, as the Senior Administrative Assistant. I recently left my job and have been working full-time as an Independent Health and Life Insurance Broker. I picked up the hobby of making 3-D cakes and have made several for my son's birthday parties including Spongebob, a firetruck and a dune buggy. I was also blessed with the opportunity to fly both a helicopter and an airplane. But most of all, I love spending time with my family!

  45. I graduated from Christian High in 2007. After High School I thought I would take some time off before starting College (we all know that rarely works). In my "time off" I got pregnant and pushed education aside to be a full-time stay at home mom. Although I LOVED spending all my time with my son I regret not starting school earlier because I could have been in a much better position in life much sooner. On the positive side, the last five years has made me realize what career I am meant to pursue. I am pursuing Veterinary Medicine. With the desire to work in this field and my son to motivate me, I am SO excited to be in school and am aiming to graduate with honors. Although it may sound cliche, I am starting to believe that you really do need to follow your dreams!

I am sure I want to pursue some type of engineering career, but I am having trouble deciding which one. And I hope that this class will help me decide which career to follow.

This will be my first year attending cuyamaca college. I am starting to get used to going back to school after a two year break from high school. I now need to prioritize and schedule the things i need to get done to accomplish my goals. I hope to learn a lot in this class and I hope it helps me succeed in the things I need to achieve.

  50. I plan on finishing my general ed classes in two years at cuyamaca college and then transferring to san diego state university. I am majoring in business. I am excited to start going to school and taking classes again. I am taking both online and in class courses. I am taking as many classes as I can handle right now, but i will slowly ease into taking more in the near future. Outside of school, my hobby is skateboarding. Riding my skateboard helps me relax and clear my mind. I also enjoy going out with my friends. I am looking forward to this class.

  51. Hello!! My name is Javier Sanchez, I am 27 years old and the middle child of my brother and sister. This will be my first online course ever since I have always done classes face to face. I am also attending some classes at cuyamaca and grossmont. My interest are close to engineering and the human body. I like to observe and learn how things work because growing up I have always fixed things around the house. As for the human body I guess its an interest and a hobby in one. I like to try to new exercises to see different results as well as reading on what types of foods help recover and rebuild muscle. Before I didn't really like being in the gym but I find it relieves my stress and its good for you so its a double win for me. Another hobby I have is working on cars, just like to get under the hood and get dirty. Last but not least is what is important to me and that is my family and their well being. As well as getting an education, this is essential to succeed.

  52. My journey is kind of bumpy and long. I did a couple of classes right after high school but never really was prepared to choose something right there and then. I never was really asked what kind of career I was thinking of or what I should look into. I did take a break, which I never should have done but I was not sure what was my next move since the market was changing and I was overwhelmed on what to do. By taking this class, I am hoping to find my way back and get a degree. My goals are to succeed and get a degree and be the first of my family to graduate from college.

  53. Hello Dr. Fralick and Class. My Name is Phillip Gonzales. I am looking forward to spending the next few months learning and implementing a plan for success in college. A few hobbies that I enjoy are golfing, surfing, cycling and traveling. I have a passionate interest in construction. It is a major reason I am coming back to school. I’d like to learn the science behind it. There are many things that are important in my life but the top three are my family, my health and my freedom to pursue my dreams. These three bring me the most happiness.

  54. I am taking this course to improve my chances of achieving my goals as a college student. I am forty-two years old and I have worked in the construction industry since I graduated high school from Helix in 1990. As a working student I am trying to get to a higher level in my career. I have been taking general education courses for the past few semesters and I have found it difficult at times to stay motivated and focused. I hope that this class will provide me with some new skills and also teach me how to set better educational goals.

  59. As previously mentioned, I am a graduate of Granite Hills and I plan to transfer to a 4 year university after completing my general education goal here at Cuyamaca College. As of now, I am gearing towards possibly majoring in business but I also like and have interests in computers and technology. I am continually changing my interests, sometimes favoring some interests more than others, but with this counseling course, I hope to narrow my options to find something that I would be happy with doing for the rest of my life. I'm searching for something that will lead me to a financially stable future and a comfy style of living.

I am studying criminal justice because I want to become a police to protect the environment. When I first came to America english was really hard, but the more I studied the easier it became. When i went to college,my sisters helped me understand the classes I took. I am taking this class to improve and get closer to my goal in becoming a policeman. I want to help my family and support them like they did for me. I also want to get better at soccer, but I would want to become a policeman more than a soccer player. I also feel the pressure of being the first one in my family to go to college so my parents really feel a lot of pride and they expect a lot of me. This is good in a way because it does give me motivation to accomplish this. I havent decided on a career but i am between three way different thing which i to be a elementary teacher ( i am good with kids), a paralegal, or a video game / 3D animation producer which is like my ultimate dream career. i am taking general classes at the moment and my goal is to take two semesters to decide what i want to be.
