Chapter 8, Taking Notes, Writing and Speaking, Oct. 13-19

This week read the chapter on taking notes, writing and speaking and then make two comments on any of these topics:

Psychologist and philosopher William James said, “The essence of genius is knowing what to overlook.” How can you take steps toward being a genius by being selective at school, at work or in your personal life?

Many students have difficulties with writing assignments because of writer’s block. Read the section on writer’s block in the text and comment on some ideas that you can use to overcome it.

Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.

Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?

Ask a question or discuss any aspect of college success that is relevant to your college experience at this point.

Make a comment on another student's post.

  1. Being selective can help someone be a better notetaker by omitting the less important supporting details. When a teacher is lecturing and a student is taking notes, the student cannot possibly write down everything the teacher says, so the student must learn to write down only what matters. This way, you are only writing key ideas and main points so that you have time to write things down and don't waste your time on smaller details. Being selective can help one manage their time by choosing what is more important and balancing priorities. The meaning of the quote by William James is that knowing what to pay attention to and what not to pay attention to is a key skill of life.

  2. Public speaking has always been something that I am terrified of, but seem to excel in because I am well prepared. Because I am so nervous about it, I dedicate all of my time to that assignment. I find that getting the writing out of the way as soon as possible is the best way to approach a speech. By having that done, the remainder of the time is all about practicing, memorizing, and editing any odd statements. I believe my fear of public speaking comes from just looking dumb and failing at something in front of an audience. But because I am able to recognize that, I can put it behind me for a few minutes by realizing that most of the people in the room are terrified of the same thing as me.

    1. Samantha, I too have a fear of public speaking. Like you I begin preparation pretty early. I do this so I can be better prepared and ease my nears about getting up in front of an audience and not knowing what I will say. In addition, I like to go over what I will be presenting on so I do not have to read of slides or stand there for a few minutes in embarrassment trying to remember what I will say. It helps me to go first if given the option to, so I don't sit there worrying about whether or not I will mess up.

    2. Like I said my friends are also shy. They are passive because of bullies. I mean there are bullies everywhere. They do not want to speak in public because they are afraid someone will laugh at them or bully them. Is that how you feel? If that is then all you have to do is be assertive. Take Esther's advice because it will really help.

  3. Being selective allows people to focus on the most relevant or important information to them. By being selective students are able to focus more on lectures, have more useful information to study, and feel more prepared for exams. By focusing on main points and key words in lectures, you are able to spend less time writing and more time actively participating and staying well engaged. When you review your notes later on, you will have only the most important information to study and can dedicate that time to actually learning, not just remembering, the information that will most likely be on the tests.

  4. The first thing to do about dealing with anxiety is admit that you have it. Take deep breaths and speak at an appropriate speed. Don't try to be perfect and be positive. Remember to try to make your speech interesting by making it appeal to your audience. It does not have to, but consider what would appeal to your audience when writing your speech. Make sure you organize your speech before you start writing it. Also, do not let the first time you read it out loud be in front of your class. Read it out loud to yourself often to practice and to your friends or family beforehand.

    1. I would actually do the same steps you mentioned. Its very important to be ready before you present your speech. I believe that as long any person practice more then he will do more better. It's also very important to organize your speech before you start writing it because as long you know what you know what your going to talk about first, then it would seem more organize and it will probably makes your speech better.

    2. Tanya I find your tips very useful in this section. I am also very terrified of speaking in front of peers. I usually do practice my speech to myself, in front of the mirror, or to my family members to get used to the pressure. It is not easy and I dread the days I have to do them but we all do things we do not like to do. Also, appealing to the audience is perfect because you see the change in their faces when they are engaged in what you are teaching them.

  5. I like many other people have experienced writers block, but by reading this chapter I was given many ideas of how to work though it. To start, I should write any ideas I do have down, if I do not have any I will look some up. If after brain storming and looking up ideas, I am still coming up blank I will take a break and get some new perspective on the subject. Once I have come back to the subject I should from that point be able to have some idea of what I would like to write about. From there on I will just begin to write and keep in mind that the rough draft is not supposed to be perfect.

    1. So many people get stuck on a rough draft because they think it has to be perfect. The best way to manage writer's block is to get your ideas on paper and then refine them later. Good post!

    2. I agree with what you're saying. I would take a break as refresher instead of trying to create a perfect paper. The extra space in between writing helps for good ideas.

  6. I always was bad at organizing things and I lost many notes that I wrote. I was always sad because sometimes I would not know the due dates. Now I'm using POWER and its really helping me out. I am organized and I have neat handwriting. POWER also helps me with tests. I improved on my tests because of POWER. In addition, I am not shy but I know many people that are shy around people. They think that people will laugh at them if they say something wrong. In addition, people are also shy because people do not show empathy toward them and that makes people passive. I am not passive because people around me are not rude. They do not do anything to me because I am assertive. I think that you have to be assertive and stop being shy!

  7. Before giving a speech always try to stay calm and take a deep breath. Practice, practice, practice! Once you have thoroughly formulated the speech practice it over and over again in front of a mirror to family and friends etc. Until you feel comfortable with the writing at hand. If you have most of the speech memorized it will be a lot easier to make eye contact with your audience and keep there attention rather then reading word for word off a piece of paper. Another way to keep their attention is by making a PowerPoint for example on the power point only list the main ideas and then give detail within the main idea, to many words on a PowerPoint can become over whelming, at the end give a great conclusion and thank your audience for their time.

  8. I had an English teacher for two semesters English 120 and 124, that thoroughly help me overcome “writers block”. I was the student that would stair at the computer or a blank piece of paper for 30 minutes before I could spit something out on the paper. A really good tool that helped and a lot of my classmates including myself was to write in a journal three times a week for ten minutes straight non-stop, regardless if nothing came to mind just writing ANYTHING and not scribbling out or erasing errors. This really helped me when it came time to writing papers! Hopefully it does for you guys as well!

    1. Thanks for the advice on over coming writers block. I too get stuck on writers block and sometimes it leads to procrastination because I just don't write anything until I can think of something which is usually at the last minute brought on by stress. I also like what the book said about just write down anything that comes to mind sometimes that is the only way to over come the obstacle of writing. I am going to try both your example and the books example the next time I have writers block to see what happens they both go hand in hand and it will be interesting to see what comes out of expressing whatever is on my mind.

  9. There are a number of things that can be done in order to cope with the anxiety created by speaking in a social setting, some of which are more effective than others. The one that has helped me overcome my crippling social anxiety the most happens to be one of the easier things to do. In order to suppress the anxiety I feel from speaking to a group of people I simply prepare everything in advance. This means I plan every action and word as well as several plans in case something goes awry. By having everything planned out I can safely focus on speaking, though this may make my presentation seem slightly mechanical it is better then the alternative of making several mistakes due to my nervousness. Though this works wonders for me there is no guarantee that it will work for everyone and you may need to experiment to find out what works best for you personally.

  10. In order to improve my writing and note taking capabilities I intend to do a couple things. The number one thing to do would be to learn one of the techniques for note taking, I have been made to use cornell notes before and am thus most familiar with that style, though I will try out the others this style seems to be the most fitting for me. I will need to start thinking of general questions to ask myself while taking notes as well as focus on finding the key points of a passage quickly. I have some trouble listening and writing at the same time so I will need to practice that when I have some free time. I will also practice on my penmanship so I can actually read my notes since currently it looks like chicken scratch. Though I wont improve overnight I believe that if I follow through with these intentions my writing and note taking will improve dramatically.

  11. This semester I have been trying my hardest to become a better writer and note taker so I enjoyed reading this chapter to help me out a little bit. I plan on making sure to focus more during lectures and notice and catch myself when I tend to wander of into another world. When I hear important facts of read something that stands out I will write it down and make sure to highlight or underline do something in the notes to have that important topic stand out more so I know where to go back to in my notes. I like the idea of the outline note taking gives it a lot more organization, I am going to try this my next time taking notes, I also will try to only write my notes on one side of the paper so that I don't have to keep flipping I can just lay them out side by side. To save paper I will use the other side on a different chapter. To improve my writing skills I am going to sure I work on it in little sections instead of cramming all in one, I will be sure to brainstorm and always have a rough draft. I will start making sure that if I get stuck on what to write next I will take a break and start brainstorming and maybe re reading what I wrote and make sure it makes sense. Last but not least I will make sure to have someone else proofread my paper to be sure of no missed mistakes.

  12. Last semester I enrolled in a public speaking class and I was terrified. I walked out of their so confident with public speaking, not saying I wont or don't get nervous still while getting up in front of people but once I start I am fine with it and realize it's not that big of a deal. Some tips that I used while in the class is talk to you peers get to know them talk to them about how they feel when they get up there to speak. Just that alone helped me tremendously to realize that almost if not everyone with exception of a few were just as nervous as I was. Also talking to them made it easier to stand up and talk in front of them. Also make sure you recite your speech aloud either in front of a mirror or in front of someone, it really helps to get feedback or see how you look and sound. Also make sure your speech is written out and organized especially when you are nervous if not you will be bouncing all over the place losing your spot and your audience. I used to make a little speaking outline which I would hold during my speech or lay on the desk in front of me just to keep me on track when I happened to forget or lose my next thought or topic. I use to even write to myself in big letter RELAX, EYE CONTACT, BREATH, WALK, these little things would be like me being my personal mentor through the speech since my nerves would take over and I would feel like oh man where am I when I got in front of people. Lastly take a few deep breaths before you get in front of people and just smile and you will be done in no time, but of course be sure not to rush through!

  13. Having completed two graduate level research papers, I completely understand writers block. However, it is not something that I have had very often. The key for me is breaking my writing up into sections. This allows me to work on areas when I am ready. When I am struggling in an area, I simply move to another part of the paper to work on. However, there have been occasions where I simply could not find the words I needed to express my thoughts. When this happens I simply do not try as I feel the work will be substandard to my expectations. I do my best not to wait to the last minute to do writing assignments, as this allows me time to collect my thoughts if needed. Writer’s block is not a pleasant thing for anyone to experience, much less college students who are on strict timelines and under pressure from professors and themselves.

  14. For me public speaking has never been an issue. I was exposed to speaking in front of groups as a Navy Instructor, where I was in front of a large group every day. I was able to relax as I knew I was the expert and my audience knew very little. This allowed me to grow comfortable in front of groups and to this day I have no issues speaking to others in any environment. The key for me is to remember I know what I am speaking about, and I am comfortable with the material. I have not used the “imagine your audience is naked” trick as I felt that would distract me from the material being presented. As we learned earlier, an ESTJ thrives on being in front of others. I do understand that an introvert can be very intimidated when speaking to groups, but it will help to know the material and trust you when it comes to discussing it. Public speaking is not for everyone, but it can be done by anyone who sets their mind to it.

  15. I really liked the quote by William James because it basically means to me that a smart person is one who uses his or her time wisely and can pass on things that are a waste of time. Being selective is important because you can decide to watch television or hang out with your friends instead of doing your homework but that is only going to hurt you and your success. I used to procrastinate so much with my homework and studying and I preferred to go online, watch television or hang out with friends but I saw how it hurt my grades and I changed that because I want to be successful in my life and watching television or being with friends is not going to get me there. Right now I choose to do the most important things first in my days and the when I have free time I decide to have fun but its always work before fun with me.

  16. I did speeches in my high school classes but I haven't done any in my college courses yet. It is easier to write down something on a discussion board because you take your time to think about what you want to write and your not nervous or feeling anxiety. The first time I did a speech I was really nervous moving around in front of the class and having my head down reading from note cards. I have learned from my mistakes and in my most recent speeches I have done better by improving on some things. For example, instead of writing my entire speech on note cards I started writing main points or main ideas I wanted to talk about and if I was stuck I would just look at my note cards for the main idea and I would remember what I wanted to talk about because I reviewed my entire speech days before I went in front of class. Something else that helped me when I was nervous is that I would look at the back wall of the class when delivering my speech but low enough that it seemed like I was making eye contact with other students but I would imagine being alone.

  17. Here are some ideas to Avoiding Writer's Block have a blank piece of paper write down what comes to your mind about the topic it doesn’t need to be organization. When people start writing there paper they automatically thinks that there paper should be perfect the first time around and that causes anxiety but it doesn’t need to be perfect because when the teacher is correcting the paper the correction will help to see that you did right and wrong. Realize that it’s only the first draft it is not the finished product. Also you can read through your reference materials the ideas you find can get your mind working. Break the assignment up into small parts write for as long as you can then take a break between write your paper because it will help you relax and refresh your mind. Find a comfortable place where you can write your paper. Beware of procrastination the more you put off writing, the more anxious you will become and the more difficult the task will be. Make a schedule and stick to it. I hope these tips help you to not to get writers block.

  18. Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?

When it comes to public speaking I’m terrified of public speaking then there is a presentation in class I automatically get an anxiety tack it takes me a while to relax. Then I’m calm the first thing I do is I reaches and find all of the information I can. Then the second thing I do is with all of the information I found I start organization what go where. The third thing I do is I start memorizing the main points of the presentation. The fourth thing I do is I start looking for any mistakes that I need correct. The fifth I do is I rehearse what I’m going to say to the class when I’m presentation.

  19. I don't mind speaking in public, but it really depends on the audience. If it is mostly strangers I tend to get more nervous. To avoid this I try to be as prepared as possible. I like to have my speeches memorized for the most part, only using my notes and outlines to briefly glance at. I like to be dressed comfortably and rested. It also helps to eat something light so that I don't lose my energy. I always bring water with me too. It's easy to get a dry throat when speaking.

    1. Hi Stephanie! I wish I had the outlook you do on public speaking. I like your idea of being prepared and memorizing the speech. I think being prepared would be helpful because for me, I always feel more comfortable talking if I am confident in my knowledge on the topic. At my last job, I would have to introduce all of the new employees at all of the All-Staff Meetings. I knew every single person in the auditorium but I was still terrified. I don't know if there is any hope for me but I know that this is something I will have to do many times in my life so it will be interesting to see if any of these techniques help!

  20. I get writer's block all the time. I like to use the mind map technique. I started to use it after reading it in this chapter. It allows me to freely jot down ideas that relate to each other and expand on them until I can develop a thesis or idea about what to write about. I usually start writing without a thesis and add that in later. I like to write my essays in small bits, maybe a half hour or an hour then take a break and come back to it later. Sometimes this allows me to think more clearly when I come back to it. I am taking English 120 and I have to say it is getting easier. I think the more you write the better you become at it.

  21. Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?

To be well speaker, I must follow those steps: organize my speech, practice indiviualy before I present my speech, and thinking positive. Organizing my my speech will help me a lot to understand what I am going to talk about during my public speech because I would have some ideas organized of what I am thinking so I can present it to the public listeners. Also I should practice as much as I can so I don't forget or make a mistakes during my speech. Lastly, I should always think positively, what I mean by that is I should always think that I can do every thing perfectly and will remind my self that I am not afraid of something.

    2. What you are trying to say here is very true. I still remember my first time taking public speaking class, every time i have a presentation i start having that anxiety where i just don't how to get rid of. In my first two presentations i had the anxiety because i was thinking that ideas will come to me as I'm speaking in which it didn't. In my third presentation i started to organize my speech and then say the speech in front of a camera that i have set to then see what i have done wrong to fix it later. This organizing and practicing worked best for me and when did the presentation i found it very easy, for i had everything set already. Also as you have mentioned thinking positively will also help to build the faith in yourself that you can do good in the speech and everything will be alright.

  22. Dealing with anxiety in public, is a struggle for most people, and I'm one of these. Getting up to people you don't know makes it harder, or a new professor. But I always take deep breaths, and focus on what I have to present. Making sure my speech is interesting, I try to memorize most of what I am reading so i can make eye contact with the my classmates. Preparing a speech is always a struggle for me, but I always like to make sure I know every word, so i don't struggle with any of the words in front of others. Understanding what you are reading so very important as well, it makes it easier.

  23. After this chapter i learned about how to take notes more careful, and not just write everything down. I will be more careful with what i write down, and review my notes more carefully before quizzes or test, and understand what i am writing. For me, i would always try to just write everything on the board, but then i realized i couldn't do that. I got way better at note taking, and now i get better test scores. This chapter helped a lot with note taking, and being careful with everything i write dow.

  24. Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.

In order for me to be a good writer, I usually follow many steps. First I must understand very well what is important to mention throughout my writing and how to concentrate to connect many ideas to the main idea. I also use some teacher help by asking her of what I should improve in my writing and if she accepts, I will ask her to read my paper in a previous time. Regarding taking notes, I prefer to analyze many information that the teacher mention to cover more details of the ideas the teacher explains. I also use highlighters to highlight key terms that are necessary.

  25. Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?
I had my first speech in highschool and it was my first time doing a speech and I was so nervous. When I stood for the first time in front of the classmates, I thought to myself in a positive way that speeches are fun, which was sort of funny. I took a deep breath and tried to relax and I kept encouraging myself that I will do great. Since that speech I never feared any speeches. Infact speeches became the most thing that I’m comfortable with.

  26. Psychologist and philosopher William James said, “The essence of genius is knowing what to overlook.” How can you take steps toward being a genius by being selective at school, at work or in your personal life?

-I used this as personal experience that I still practice to this day of being selective. I organized my room and closet by removing clutter and telling myself. If I have not used a specific item in my room or closet within 3-6 months then it is definitely time to get rid of it. I avoid having junk taking the space in my already giant room. By also practicing selective note taking and writing will help clear out unneeded information in the brain and focus on key points. I do believe in this method of note taking because focusing on everything is nice but with everyday life and finding time to study is limited, especially for busy bodies. The key points will basically be more effective and help retain in the long term memory drawer.

  27. Public speaking is an ongoing thing, especially because we do not all practice this method. For my self I know that I get anxiety attacks and a million ideas run through my brain making me forget my speech or topic. Heart beat is loud enough to hear and feel through my chest. The best way I overcome this is to go first, as much as it kills me to do this. It sets the bar for my fellow classmates and I feel like I get a lighter grading rubric since I went first. But over all, I practice my speech and try to go over different topics individually so I know what I am explaining. From this lesson, breathing techniques also can help I feel. Get rid of those last minute jitters, but in reality I feel to truly overcome public speaking is to NOT procrastinate and be on point with your studies and quiz yourself to make sure you are ready as best as you possibly can. Making mistakes is okay, its how we learn as humans.

  28. Ways to overcome writer's block is not easy. I tend to try to relax myself by going outside and just viewing whats in my sight to see if an idea pops in my head. I also try to talk with my mom or friends to suggest me an idea of a concept which also works. I usually get writer's block and it is the worst feeling, but that is why it is good to start on an assignment a week before it is due to allow you some time to think. Never stress yourself out more than you need to. Writer's block makes you want to give up but you shouldn't let that stop you.

  29. writer's block has always been a problem for me while trying to write in any of my writing assignments. I always get stuck in a point where i have no idea what so ever on what to write about. In the writer's block of chapter 8 in our course, the writer's block section gave me some good ideas in how to avoid writer's block. One of the idea that i found to be very effective is write freely.
The effectiveness that free writing gives to the writer is that it lets that his or her brain get all of their ideas out, then later the planing of writing will be more clear to the writer to then start writing. Also fining a good place for writing is a good way to avoid writer's block because if the writer's is comfortable in the place he or she is trying to get his ideas for his writing assignment he will be more able to find good ideas to write about.

  30. Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?

I love getting in front of a large group of people because they have to listen to what I am saying. This is one of the reasons that I want to be a teacher. One of my teachers in school told me that there is nothing to be scared of when getting in front of people; just tell yourself to relax and you are the center of attention. One of the things that I always tell my family and friends is that you need to practice your speech over and over. The speaker needs to hook the audience in. Then relax and let everything that you have been studying come naturally. Teachers do know that most people are scared to get in front of the class, so RELAX.

  31. Many students have difficulties with writing assignments because of writer’s block. Read the section on writer’s block in the text and comment on some ideas that you can use to overcome it.
Every time I am writing an essay I get writer’s block. One of my biggest problems are I want to write the whole paragraph in one sitting without a break. Then when I do take a break, I am thinking about the essay. My whole world becomes that essay. When I get overwhelmed with the essay I need to get up and walk away for a little bit. The text book also said write down whatever comes in your head and I do; but I want to put the words in complete sentences. While I am writing the sentence I forget what my thought was. I really need to just write down the key points. I have a history essay coming up so this will be a good practice run for me.

  32. Public speaking has always been something I have struggled with persona. Up until the day I that I say the speech, it is always on my mind and gives me stress and anxiety. When I am up there my heart starts to beat really fast and my hands start to shake uncontrollably and I talk extremely fast that half the time no one knows that I say. Ways that help with dealing with the anxiety is practicing endlessly. The more you know what you are talking about, you will be more confident in what you are saying. Also try to get comfortable with your audience so that way you can ease the nerves.

  33. Writers block is something that I feel like many people have trouble with. To avoid this happening, I like to take breaks in between when writing. Also I always have a friend help me write If i have any troubles and bounce ideas off of each other so I do not get stuck about what to write about. Starting your writing early is always a good idea. This way you will not be as stressed about what to write and have time to think about what you want to write about. Although sometimes I have troubles and get frustrated when I am stuck on what to write about, I always use one of these things to help me overcome my frustration.

  34. William James stated that, “The essence of genius is knowing what to overlook.” Too often in life we focus on small incidents that deter us from our goals. If we can get past nitpicking and look at the big picture we are able to prioritize and focus on what is important. Focusing on our overall performance at work can help us feel more confident. If we are late once and we let it ruin our day it can have negative effects on the way we see our job as a whole. The same goes for school we have to be selective about the material we study in order to not become overwhelmed and set ourselves up for success.

  35. Public speaking is something that causes me to feel anxious. However, I have learned that it is a valuable skill to have. In the workplace people who share their opinions among others are often the ones who are credited with coming up with most of ideas. I believe the key is to be confident in the information you are providing. If you are focused on the information you are sharing it takes the focus away from the crowd of people. Being knowledgeable and prepared can improve that confidence and enhance a speech.

  36. Some things that I found out to help me with being a better writer and note taker is to focus more during lectures. By focusing more on lectures you get to absorb more information. Having more information can helps me organize things better because I kinda get a layout for stuff better. Taking notes helps me study for tests. If I did not take notes, I would not do well on my tests because I would not know what I needed to study on. I can become a better writer by knowing how to do the format and keep writing until it becomes easy.

  38. I am one of the students that has difficulty with writing assignments because of writer's block. One way that I learned to try and avoid writer's block on College Scope is to write freely. I need to grab a piece of paper and write anything that comes to mind about my topic. I learned that free-writing helps you to overcome one of the main causes of writer's block, which is thinking that you need to be perfect from the start. Another tip that I found helpful in avoiding writer’s block is to become aware of procrastination and to realize that waiting until last minute will only put more stress on myself and build up more anxiety for myself.

  39. Public speaking is the biggest fear that American’s have, and that is understandable because I know that I am terrified of public speaking. I would rather do anything than go up and present in front of people. Because I get so nervous of public speaking I have learned of some ways to relax myself. One way is to make myself fully prepared. I understand my topic fully and make sure I have my material memorized. I practice my speech over and over again in front of my family so I prepare myself. I also remind myself that it is okay to make a mistake because I’m human and nothing is perfect. I try my hardest and try to aim for perfect, but I don’t put myself down when it is not 100% perfect. I let myself relax and remind myself that it is just a speech.

  40. Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?

This semester I am taking Communication 122 which is the general education requirement for public speaking. The book does a good job with tip on lowing anxiety and I have used these methods to help me with my speeches. It is very important to practice your speech several times to be comfortable with your speech before performing in front of the class. The better prepared you are to say your speech the more confidence you will have while your speaking and it will be harder for you to make mistakes. Always take a deep breath before you get in front of the class and it helps while you are speaking to the class as well and you forget something. Remind yourself that the word nervous sometimes plays on our emotions try to think of yourself being excited instead of nervous it still feels the same but when you think of excitement there tends to be less negative thoughsts associated.

    1. I like your idea of replacing nervousness with excitement. It is a positive way of looking at the situation and can lower anxiety. Good job!

  41. Write some intention statements about what you will do to become a better writer or note taker.
By becoming a better writer I would need to help myself out by writing every day so that I can become a better writer and that will be an amazing because learning is a key of a success to me that’s how I see it. I can try to write as much as possible so that I can get involve with writing so that I can learn more writing and writing will lead me to read more and make the thought easier by writing what I read. Writing daily can improve a lot by doing so because it will involve a daily reports. Writing can improve refreshing the thought and not forget the case of action because of daily report and by going back and reading the notes back can improve the brain to remember the case well.

Be positive about what you are going to say and never lose yourself out and try to be ready for the public speaking by to the practice before heading up to the stage. Make a little notes so that you can cover while you up there and try to explain what you want the listener to hear from you. Look at the people while on speaking because you want them to be feeling you while you up their talking to them otherwise you going to lose their attention. Make sure they get the point that you were trying to explain ask questions and answer their questions and try to be honest.

  43. I intend to try to start brainstorming before I delve into a writing assignment. It has always been my method to let ideas come to me as I write, which can cause horrible instances of writer's block right off the bat for me: if I can't think of something to get going, I think there's no point and will give up until an idea randomly hits me. Instead of giving up, I think I should sit down and brainstorm ideas to get inspired, before I even try to dice in. If I research different topica and get lots of ideas then record then on paper, I can form a thesis, then take one of the ideas and write the first sentence or thought of my essay/writing assignment.

  44. Public speaking is something I do not do very often, but i get the same feelings when I have to address a group of people as I do before/during a musical performance: horrible anxiety, to the point that it really affects my ability to "perform". To me, public speaking is actually a lot like performing for an audience: mastering the material you will be presenting will alleviate a LOT of the feelings of pressure. However, for me even if I know material inside and out my nerves still make themselves known and I am able to cope with that by focusing on my breathing and really visualizing myself playing/saying something the way I know I can. I even imagine the happy feeling of pride and satisfaction I'll feel with a job well done. This helps a lot for the nerves, but it definitely boils down to knowing everything you can about what you're going to present.

  45. Public speaking for me personally, can be difficult. I tend to be more timid standing in front of a class of my peers. With that said, I have had to do oral presentations- some better than others. A tip I would maybe suggest is trying to partner with a friend. It feels more relaxed if you have someone up there with you. Well, for me at least. But if you're individually giving a presentation I was given tips to: keep arms a t a comfortable positioning, but not crossed, stand up tall, speak loudly and learn to project, as well as facing your audience and making eye contact or have a fixed area to look up at every once in awhile.

    1. Kiara- I think it would be safe to say that the majority of us get nervous when we have to get up in front of an audience to speak. I know when I start giving a presentation my heart starts to race, my hands get sweaty, and my voice sounds like I am about ready to cry! I would have to agree with you when you said having a partner to do it with makes it so much easier. it definitely takes the pressure off. I also like the tips you gave when giving an individual presentation. I tend to speak with my hands moving all over the place.

  46. Do you have any ideas about how to relax while speaking in public?

I am awful at public speaking; my hands get sweaty, I start getting heart palpitations, my face turns red and I start choking on my words.Everyone keeps telling me that the more I do it, the easier it will be but for now I can help relax myself by taking deep breaths, talking positively to myself and realize that I do not need to be perfect. I have noticed that once I start speaking, I get less and less nervous, but it is getting to that point that is the most difficult.

  47. Writing is a tool that I use daily in my life. It is a type of communication which I use more now that I am back in school. It is important that I write effectively to convey the information I am learning in my classrooms. I intend to improve my writing by
-Preparing more effectively. I will gather information, write a clear thesis statement and schedule time to complete my work.
-I will organize my topics and arrange them in order.
-I will write clearly using an introduction, body and conclusion. I will also cite outside sources which I use as evidence to support my thesis.
-I will edit and revise critically my writings so I can turn in my best work possible.
