Chapter 7, Improving Memory and Reading, Oct. 6-12

I enjoyed reading about all your goals and time management strategies on the blog last week. Many of you have challenges with work, family, school and social life. Keeping your focus on your priorities, breaking the tasks into small parts and finding a reward will keep you on the right path.

For this week, read the following situations and comment on two of them using ideas from Chapter 7, Improving Memory and Reading. Have a great week.

1.            You just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.
2.            In your anatomy and physiology class, you are required to remember the scientific name for 100 different muscles in the body.
3.            You signed up for a philosophy class because it meets general education requirements. You are not interested in the class at all.
4.            You have a mid-term in your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one month.
5.            You must take American history to graduate from SDSU. You think that history is boring.
6.            You have been introduced to an important business contact and would like to remember his/her name.
7.            You are enrolled in an algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at math. You don’t think that you will pass this class.
8.            You have noticed that your grandmother is becoming very forgetful. You want to do whatever is possible to keep your mind healthy as you age.

9.            Comment on any other students' posts.

  1. I do not feel it is ever good to continually tell yourself you are bad at or cannot do something. If I was taking an Algebra class and felt my skills were not up to par, the last thing I would do is undermine myself. I would try to increase my math skills by asking for help or using a tutor. I know that sometimes I learn more from a classmate than I do a teacher. The relationship with my classmate puts us on the same level and reduces my anxiety of telling the professor I do not understand. If you continually tell yourself that you will fail, the likely result will be failure. I took statistics and knew it would be hard, but I did the work and lots of it. I was able to pass the class with a decent grade, but it was the best I could do so I am proud of that B.

    2. These are good examples of a concept known as the self-fulfilling prophecy. You are what you think. If you catch yourself with negative thoughts, make an effort to think positively and take action to be successful.

  2. I am in a class now where there are a large number of terms to learn and memorize. The way I am learning them is by breaking them into categories and sections of the body. I have done this with many classes where I was introduced to new terminology. By segregating the terms into areas or sections, I learn them in groups. I also utilize flash cards in memorization efforts. I feel I learn as much from making the cards as I do from using them. If I were to attempt to simply try and learn them from a massive list, it would be difficult to become proficient. I also feel it is imperative to find a way to enjoy learning new terms, even when you do not enjoy it. It is all part of the college experience.

  3. My plan for keeping my brain healthy throughout my life and as I age consists of many ideas. First, I will do mind strengtheing exercies, such as doing puzzles. I love doing Japanese Sudoko puzzles, and those are good for the brain. Also, I try to exercise for at least 1 hour a day for 5 days a week. I struggle with the diet aspect, because it is hard for me to avoid carbohydrates, but I have been trying to replace them with fruits and vegetables. Also, I get adequate amounts of rest every night. Lastly, I am taking 5 college courses which help stimulate my brain.

    1. Yess!!! Once again, just like me, I think its so important to do exercises for your brain! I think thats so important for our college life, and making sure we get our fruits and vegetables, which is important. Working out helps me be more focused. keep up the good work!

  4. If I enroll myself in an algebra class and am not that good at math, I would definitely not constantly remind myself of that or doubt that I can pass the class. I would think positively about myself by actually believing in myself and not doubting what I can do. I would tell myself that I CAN do the task at hand. Also, I will kep my eyes on the prize and remind myself why I am taking the class in the first place. I will remember that many people would kill to be in my place in college, because it is a good thing. The connection between belief and success is important, because if you do not believe you can be successful, then you are letting yourself down and you probably won't be more successful.

  5. After having the read chapter of the economics assignment go in one ear and out the other I would need to formulate a plan that allows the information to stick in my head better. In order to accomplish this I would skim through the chapter quickly reading passages that seamed important. After I finished this task I would highlight keywords so that they would be easy to find for future reviewing. Once theses tasks are completed it would be time to reread the chapter while asking myself questions about the subject material, this would allow me to keep the info in my STM longer and increase the chance of it being written to my LTM

    1. I like your hypothetical plan and can see myself doing about the same in such a situation. Another thing I'd try is shifting my environment. For example, if I'm closed up in a room I might try going outside and reading. Or if I find I can't focus on the material because I'm falling asleep as a result of reading in my bed, I'd try sitting up in a chair.

    2. Previewing or skimming the chapter is a great way to become familiar with a new topic before you attend class. It helped me survive economics and now I think it is one of the more important courses that I took in college.

  6. Having been assigned a decently sized reading assignment I believe it would be difficult to ingest all of the information properly without making use of several reading skills and tricks. The first trick is to get a general idea of the material by skim reading the book and filing away potentially important bits of information, this allows you to get a peek at the bigger picture so you can understand where the information you are reading is leading to. After this you can read through the material while asking yourself questions pertaining to the chapter. Highlighting important information will allow you to come back and review the subject later to help embed it into your memory. Lastly I would review the information one last time by reading through my highlighted lines, ensuring that I will remember at least the important parts of the material at hand.

  7. You have a mid-term in your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one month.

The first thing I would do in this situation is breaking down the 400 pages into reading 14 pages a day. I wouldn't just sit down and read 14 pages everyday but I would also first skim through the 14 pages and ask questions about each topic in those 14 pages. I would read the 14 pages and answer the questions I wrote down and also take more notes on other key points. I would also review my answers and notes every night to keep them in my memory and better remember the material.

  8. You are enrolled in an algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at math. You don’t think that you will pass this class.

In this case I would stop reminding myself that I have never been good in math and instead use positive thinking such as I am good in math, I am going to do good in my math class, and I am going to pass my math class. This way I am using positive thinking to keep myself going and to do good in my math class. I would also find something that interests me about my math class. If I want to pursue a business degree then I would look at math as a business learning class because in business we have to use math. I would also practice the math material everyday and learn the equations by challenging myself.

  9. 1. You just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.
If I have an economic class and I have to read chapter, I will use sticky notes and flashcard. Sticky notice will help me to remember and they are a lot beneficial. I will read each parghraph and summarized then write down the main important things in the sticky notes and sticker next to the paragraph. Flashcard will help me with the vocabulary where I can use flashcard and quiz myself. Later, I can return to the assigned chapter and read my summary and sticky notes will help to recall the information, and then quizzing myself with the flashcard. This technique will help me a lot with the memory.

  10. If i was enrolled in a algebra class, and I knew I wasn't good at math, I would remind myself that I can do this, and stop thinking about the negativity. I will always tell myself to stay positive and always make sure i am doing the best I can, and get the help when i need it. I think if you have a positive state of mind, you will do great in any difficult class. I will just have to put more focus on Math than my other subjects, but still maintain everything, that needs to be done.

  11. 2. In your anatomy and physiology class, you are required to remember the scientific name for 100 different muscles in the body.

Its funny that this scenario is one of the options because I am actually memorizing the different muscles in my anatomy class currently. I also have to know the origin, insertion, and action of each of the muscles. A great way for me to memorize where the muscles are at and the OIA’s is for the muscle is to make flash cards and recite the flash cards. I also like to shuffle the flash cards so that I don’t just memorize them in order. Its very handy to make flash cards to quiz myself throughout the day when I don’t always have my backpack with me.

  12. 5. You must take American history to graduate from SDSU. You think that history is boring.

This scenario also relates to me, I’m in a history class right now for my general ed. I have never really enjoyed history, nor did I understand it very well. I have always been more of a science math kind of person. A memorization technique I have started to use while in this class is trying to develop an interest. It helps me to learn history like a story and when I read and recite and understand different things that happened thought-out history it helps me build an interest in what I’m learning while in class.

  13. You must take American history to graduate from SDSU. You think that history is boring.

I would challenge my self and think that history is fun class and I should enjoy it. I would also remind my self that finishing that class would make me a better person and history will teach me a lot of things that might not heard about them before. I should always make everything looks interested for me so I can do well on in especially if that class like history requires me to pass it so I can graduate. Again I should always remind my self that if I don't study well or if I don't do well in history, I won't be ready enough to achieve my dreams.

  14. You are enrolled in an algebra class. You continually remind yourself that you have never been good at math. You don’t think that you will pass this class.

This is relates to me, I am not really good in math but, what I would do is I will try to surprise my self and think that no thing is impossible for me. I would also think that I am smarter than math and I can always do it and do better on it. I would try to keep forgetting that I am not good in math, and I would think positively that this is easy for me and I can handle it. Thinking about all of these things I mentioned would help me a lot to pass that test and get a good grade. But I should also keep in mind that I should practice and work hard to achieve something good.

Ahhh yes, my awesome attention span of moth kicks in here and there I admit, I always dread reading long chapters. I have this problem almost every time and it is something I hope to practice to perfect. In small baby steps of course, but for me I see works easily is when I break down the chapters in paragraphs and write a small detailed sentence on a memo pad that I can understand. At the same time I am keeping in mind of the questions for the chapter so I have an outline as to what I should be looking for. Since this takes practice and time to perfect, its a good idea to start early to break down the chapters and not get behind. I feel like I understand the chapters better because I break it down and not word for word but a general idea so I don't get lost in the chapters.

  16. 8.You have noticed that your grandmother is becoming very forgetful. You want to do whatever is possible to keep your mind healthy as you age.

The important thing I would start to try and get into a habit of doing is getting healthier. Nothing dramatic that stresses my body out, but in a slow pace that gradually allows me to stay safe and still get better. As well as reading and staying away from the television. Getting in touch with old high school pals and or co-workers, however I would start to write letters so it would force me to write and use my brain instead of just texting. Not to mention, it would get me out of the house enjoy social conversations with others. On spare time, start hitting up the old news paper sections of Sudoku and use some mental strategies to improve my math skills and just keep them sharp so I don't fall off. Then as much as it hurts too say, I would probably have to change my eating habits and go on a diet to make sure I don't eat a lot of processed foods and only feed my body the right types of foods that will help me loose weight, stay fit, and keep my mind sharp as well.

  17. If I was not able to remember the things I read in economics I would reread the chapter. While rereading the chapter I would highlight important details and try to find some personal meaning in the text. By finding some personal meaning I am able to remember details and facts better because I have created a way to recall them. This is just one of the few methods I could use to remember details from chapters in school that I have to read. If this one does not work I would once again reread and find another method to help me remember such as taking notes or asking questions in the margin.

  18. 6.In order to help me remember a business woman or man's name I would do a few different things. First I would repeat the name to be sure that I have heard it correctly for example "Nice to meet you, Mark." After I have certainty of the persons name I would repeat his name five times in my mind. In addition to help me remember I would create some connection to his name. I have an uncle named Mark. So when I see this man again and need to remember his name I will recall that him and my uncle share the same first name. By doing this I am able to jog my memory.

In my economics text book the first thing I would do is I look at the tile and then I read the first paragraph or the introduction of the chapter. The second thing I would do is skim each paragraph on the page. The third thing I would do is I would go back to find the main points of each the paragraph. Then the fourth thing I would do is go and read each paragraph at my reading speed.

  20. You have been introduced to an important business contact and would like to remember his/her name.

When I meet an important business contact I would talk to the person little bit after just meeting the person and then I would say need to go talk to the important contact later. Then I would keep on saying there name in my head. Then went I know the person name I would find the person and talk to them more and find out there likes and dislikes and find out what they like to do for fun and in between talk to the important contact I would say their name in the conversation to make sure that the name is correct.

  21. 4.You have a mid-term in your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one month.
If I was assigned this many pages to read in a month I would definitely not try to wait until the last minute to cram it all in. Instead I would do more of a taking the big assignment and breaking it into smaller work. So If I had a month to read 400 pages I would say OK 30/31 days in a month and I would divide that into 400 which would give me a number about around 12/13 pages. So I would read about 12 or 13 pages a day and I would focus mainly on those pages for that day, focus on important details and make sure that before I move on I have quite a good understanding about what I have just read. Trying to cram too much reading in at one time will maybe get the reading done but you really wont have any clue on what you have read because it was too fast and the information wasn't repeated and recited as necessary and remained in the short term memory vs. long term memory.

This is one that I struggle with all the time and now I know instead of just assuming I am horrible and math and already have told myself I will fail before I even give myself a chance. This chapter has helped show me that in order to succeed you have to know it is possible know that it is going to happen and believe in yourself. If you keep having negative thought about the algebra class and you say to yourself that you will never understand it, it makes you mind actually lose focus and not able to pay attention to what you should actually be paying attention to to learn. When you think positively you set goals for yourself it is a good challenge to give yourself more room to grow and excel in a subject that maybe once you didn't understand. Positive thoughts will keep your mind pushing on asking for help when needed because you know you can understand this algebra, but maybe you just need a different approach to solving the problems or just some extra study time to understand the material.

The first thing you should do is go back and skim the chapter. While you skim the chapter write question down on the side that you want to know more about or will help you understand the bigger picture. Now its time to read the chapter again slowly and think about the questions you wrote down before. In the end review that chapter quickly, highlighted items review with thought.

I would start by taking good notes during the lectures and use those notes to create flash cards. Each day I would study 10 new flash cards and any from the previous days. I would do this for 10 days then start over and keep repeating this process until I could name all 100 without any errors. Sometimes it can be helpful to do this with another classmate.

  25. 6. You have been introduced to an important business contact and would like to remember his/her name.

This is a bad habit that I am going to work hard to change. I always used to tell myself that I was just bad at learning names but after reading this chapter I feel that a lot of that was just mental and I was not learning names because I wasn't trying. The first thing I will do is make sure that when people our introducing themselves I need to pay attention and not be thinking about other stuff while they talk. If the name isn't clear then make sure you ask them to repeat it so you understand what you are remembering. Once they introduce themselves try to use their name right away to store it in your LTM. The book says to repeat the name in your head at least 5 times. Also try to associate their name with something your can remember so every time you see them you can recall the name.

I am only taking Math 088 and even though I was a little surprised at how bad I did on the assessment test in this area, I know why now. I haven't used this kind of Math in many years and as I am learning more and doing well on my tests I just keep reminding myself that I am not bad at Math I just need practice. I use My Math Lab a lot and do the question over many times if it is a difficult section. It is hard to stop the negative talk in your head sometimes, but I am getting more confident as I learn more and I am actually a little excited about taking another Math class next semester.

I would start reading the book right when I get it. I would read about 14 pages a day. While I am reading I would highlight the important details. There are 400 pages and I would not be able to remember what I read at the beginning of the story, so I would annotate. Every day after I read the 14 page, I would go back and read the notes. Most of the time when I read it goes in one ear and out the other. I do annotate when I read, but I do not go back and read the notes as I should be. Next time I have an assignment like this I will take a break then go back and read my notes; therefore, the day of the test I will remember what I read in the beginning of the book

I do think that history is boring. I really do not care what happen in 1809. I care more about what is going to happen in the future then the past. I would try to find someone in the class that I could study with that might also not like history. I would read, highlight the important details, and annotate the book. Also, I would write down the vocabulary words on notecards. Then the other person and I would try to meet up before class to talk about what we have just read. Then a week before the test study everything that we have read.

Also, studying with someone else is very helpful and helps them teach you things you did not know and vice versa. It is always fun to have some sort of company unless you prefer to work alone and study quietly. Note cards are also very helpful if you plan to use them and study them. A good method for keeping your mind healthy as you age is to keep it running continuously. I can do this by playing jigsaw puzzles or playing cards. Dancing is also a great exercise for your mind. Caffeine tends to stress you out and is not a very good method to use. I would also look into returning to a community college to take some fun classes or classes to help me stay up to date. One last thing I would love to continue to do to keep me healthy as a age is play soccer because I enjoy it so much and I don't think ill ever get tired of playing it.

I was recently in a similar situation and found that visualization and acting it out helped me to remember all of the information. I set aside separate time after class to stay and study. I used the skeleton dummy that was set up in class and touched every bone as I said the name. In this case, positivity is the best way to get through it. Though I am very good at math, I often struggled with English because I didn’t enjoy the process of writing. I didn’t like editing and revising, and the fact that there was no wright answer. By keeping a positive attitude it helped me to not get overwhelmed and anxious with my assignment. This is a common issue that I constantly struggle with. I will read a chapter out of one of my books, and as soon as I am done reading, I forget everything I read and do not learn anything. To find a solution to this problem, I will divide up the chapter and for each paragraph, I will go back and highlight and write the most important details that are being said. I also would reflect and think about what I just read and question myself as to why this is important. Also, I can use notecards to write down important key terms and quiz myself after so I can memorize them quicker. Also these techniques will help me improve in this class and better my memory.

I would divide up the reading and try to read around 15 pages a day so that way I am not overwhelmed with so much reading. Each day, I would focus on those certain pages that I am reading and highlight and understand the main key points and understand what is being said in the reading. I also review what I read from the previous day so that way it is still fresh in my mind. This technique will help me memorize and understand what is being said in those 400 pages and prepare me for my literature mid-term.

I would approach this situation by creating flashcards and using the SAFMEDS method. Writing terms and definitions has always een an ideal way for me to memorize things, and this method sounds like it would be perfect for me. Since I have never tried it and can't be sure it would prove efficient, if it did not work for me then I would study and memorize by writing the scientific names out repeatedly, a timely but effective process.

In this case I would use memory aids such a pneumonic devices and “seeing the big picture.” It is likely that most of us won’t have to remember that kind of information on a daily basis. However, we can relate it to our own bodies in a big picture approach. Sometimes thinking of something silly like a rhyme or a dance can make us laugh and then make that pleasant memory stick out in our minds. We can also make up “mock quizzes” or flash cards in order to test how much information we can recall and isolate the parts which we have not commited to our long term memory and further study them.

I would plan out how much to read daily or on a weekly basis in order to stay on track. I would also keep notes of whatever I read in order to properly recall the information and relate it to the reading. I think that writing while we read is important because it allows us to revisit the imformation and take notes of things we don’t understand, such as the definition of a certain word. It can also help us make connections as to how characters relate or notate important quotes.

I need to have a history class to graduate from SDSU and I think that history is so boring. I sit alone and try to think positively that I must pass this class in order to graduate, even if I don’t like it. I must think of my graduation and success in the future or in other words I must think of the rewards that I will receive.

  42. You have a mid-term in your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one mont

Reading and memorizing is one of the most important things to do in college. I am now in a literature class and i have 400 pages to memorize in one month. One thing I will do to memorize the 400 pages is to break the 400 pages to four groups each group contains 100 words. In each week i will try to finish one group in a matter of 4 weeks i will be able to finish the whole book. I hope at the last day of the month i will do good in the mid term.

  43. Even though i love history and what it teaches me, but if i ever get in a history class where i think its boring i will try to make it part of my life. What I mean in here is that i will try to read the history apply it to the present and see the differences and try to make it exciting for me. Another trick that can make me good at that is by trying to read positively. Reading positively means to read and pretend that the reading that i am doing is liked to me. In this way when i ma reading what i like my brain will most likely help me to understand the material better.

    1. Will I think you already have a plan for that and that’s a good step of starting it and to memorizing the 400 pages, I mean that’s a lot of work but I would think to probably to go again and try to read it because if you try only one time reading is not going to help try to go back and read again in case of you forget some parts that could help reminding you of it. I would always go back and check on the next week for that just to make sure I did not forget anything in case if I do I would have to read that again and again.

    2. Reading history and trying to relate it to your personal life is a great way to get interested in history. I have also tried imagining what life was like during different periods in history and this makes it more interesting.

  44. 1. You just read the assigned chapter in economics and cannot remember what you read. It went in one ear and out the other.

For situation #1 I feel like I can personally relate because this happens to me sometimes. I find my self re-reading the lines but not retaining any substance. What I usually do is read aloud or just a section at time time so it does not become overwhelming. It also helps to maybe write an outline and or take notes, so you can have something to refer back to.

    1. I have this happen to me sometimes too! If I am not in the mood to read or study, I can read the same sentence for fifteen minutes and still have no idea what I read. Sometimes it helps me if I skim through and find something interesting that I want to learn more about. This helps me to get a little more enthusiastic and motivated to do the reading and helps it to sink in more.

  45. 2. In your anatomy and physiology class, you are required to remember the scientific name for 100 different muscles in the body.

For situation #2, I can also relate. From having such things as vocab. I would normally make some flash cards and repetitively go through the stack and I eventually start to memorize and don't need them any further. The ones that I find particularly difficult to remember I put them back in the stack so I can review them more often. For example, If I were studying for the 100 different muscles in my body I would do the exact same as I stated.

What happen is if somebody were supposed to do some type of reading and that thing must be done for that amount of time it’s kind of confusing because of the brain stress. To me I try always to make it simple as much as I can when I try to read because I would not like to sit down and read for an amount of time and that time is wasted because of not paying attention to what I am reading, basically I try to deeply think and be at somewhere that I can try to be having a quite reading room. And economic is good that somebody try to learn because it helps a lot in future.

  47. 4. You have a mid-term in your literature class and have to read 400 pages in one month.

Thinking about having 400 pages to read in such a limited amount of time can seem extremely overwhelming. It can seem more manageable if it is broken down into smaller portions. The reading in this scenario can be broken down into 14 pages per day. If you focus on the daily task instead of the overall amount, it can be easily tackled. When reading, you should use the memory techniques discussed in chapter 7. For example, prior to reading the chapter, skim through to get an idea of the main point and what will be discussed.

  48. Remembering names-This is something I don’t have much practice with at this time. As of now, my social circles are smaller and they have developed over a large period of time. However it is a skill that will be necessary with my progression with both my career and school. I foresee being introduced to important business contacts so it is a skill that I should develop. When I am introduced to important people I blank out because I become distracted by my concerns of their perceived impressions of me. I usually want to make a good first impression and I don’t really have a seasoned opening statement so I internally panic. This causes me to miss the opportunity to remember names. From this point forward, I will try the association and rhyme techniques to help me remember the new people I'm introduced to. I will make an effort to think of something personal to associate the person with. For instance with the name Bob, I can think “Bob”ing for apples. With some practice I should be able to successfully hone this new found skill.
