September 29-Oct 5, Managing Time and Money

This new chapter is about time management and is one of the most powerful chapters in the text. For this week's discussion, share one of your lifetime goals and describe the time management techniques you will use to accomplish this goal. If there are obstacles in the way, how will you deal with them?

For your second post, read another student's post and make a comment about it. Sometimes it is helpful to read about other students' goals and how they are managing to accomplish them. The first post can be longer and the second one can be shorter.

I will share with you one of my lifetime goals and how I used the ideas in this chapter to accomplish it. My lifetime goal was to write a book on how to be successful in college because I struggled as a young college student and learned how to be successful. Then I taught the topic for 35 years. I had some time off from work and set as my goal to write the text. I found myself distracted by things around the home. I would get up in the morning and exercise, make myself a nice breakfast, read the paper and do a few household chores. Soon the day was gone and I had not accomplished my goal. I decided to work on my goal first and then reward myself with exercise and other things that I wanted to do. It was just a matter of rearranging my tasks. I still found it difficult to get started. I used the idea of a leading task. I would just sit at the computer, fill my head with ideas and start to write. Then I would refine the writing the next day. Within 6 months I had the first draft of the text written. Today it is used in about 60 colleges across the country. The CollegeScope material is my latest project.

Ok, I have shared one of my goals and how I accomplished it. Now it is your turn. Tell about something you accomplished in the past or something you hope to accomplish in the future. See if you can use some of the time management ideas in the text.

  1. One of my lifetime goals is to own a house. My first step in achieving this goal was to go to college. Time management is particularly difficult for me and contributes greatly to my success in college. In order to get a house, I need a good job, in order to have the job I desire, I need to attend Grad school, in order to attend Grad school, I need to get good grades and in order to get good grades I need to manage my time wisely so I can study and turn in my work on-time. Achieving this big goal of mine begins with something as small as time-management. I need to make sure that I stay disciplined and schedule blocks of time for me to study with out anything distracting me.

    1. Owning a house is also one of my lifetime goals. Making a schedule with blocks of study time is a great time management tool. Also, we share the problem of distraction. Sometimes, I go to Starbuck's to study or work on homework, but I find that I get way too distracted there because of the people I see and the noise. To save time, I try to just finish my schoolwork at home.

    2. Owning a house is definitely a great goal to have in life, one which I also happen to share with you. I also believe that in order to obtain something large like that you need to start with the little things and work your way up, just like when building a house you must first secure a stable foundation. A good way to stay motivated would be to think of all the money you would save from owning your own house over renting one, as well as thinking about how you would have something to leave to your children in the future.

    3. The small steps you take each day will eventually lead to accomplishing those bigger goals. Keep going!

  2. One of my most important life goals is to graduate from a university with my bachelor's, and then get my master's or doctor's, depending on what I choose to be in the future. The first step in accomplishing this goal is to continue to do well at Cuyamaca so I have the grades to transfer to a university. Then for two years, I will continue to put school first and will finally, after 4 long years, graduate from college and get my bachelor's. I can motivate myself to accomplish this goal by remembering what is to come ahead; the job I love, the money, the more free time. Time management tools I use are keeping a planner to keep my school stuff organized. When I get home from school, I work on my homework right away. I make sure that any schoolwork I have is complete before I hang out with friends or watch television.

    1. Tanya, I have a similar goal regarding school. I plan to be very dedicated to my studying so that I can receive a degree. Though, unlike you I do not know what degree I want yet. I believe you are using a good time managing technique by using your planner. I also have a planner, although I do not always find the time to write my schedule in it. Yet I do make sure to get my studies done like you also do.

    2. I also have a very similar goal to finish my general ed at grossmont/cuyamaca and then maintain good grades to transfer to a university to finish my Bachelors of Science in Nursing! Do you have a career that you have chosen yet Tanya, or are you still undecided? I think your time management is also a great idea and keeps you on track and focused on your A priorities!

    3. Me and you are exactly alike, we both like to stay focused, and so determined to reach our goals. That is important to the both of us. We both want to in the medical field, so its exciting for the both of us, you will be successful with the motivation you have. Keep up the good work, cause you will get far. Studying is important for the both of, and i think with that we will both be successful. Keep it up!:)

    4. Hi Tanya! I think that you have a very relate-able and admirable goal. I will be doing the same thing as you and transferring to a university from Cuyamaca. I also this about the same things when trying to keep myself motivated. It can definitely be a struggle trying to balance time with friends and family with doing homework but can be done with discipline. I wish you the best of luck in you education!

  3. One of my lifetime goals is to earn a degree. I plan on achieving this but keeping up on my studies and staying decided to my schooling. I will make sure that the time needed for completing homework is given. Another goal that goes along with this one is finding a career that I will enjoy. I plan on find this career by taking a variety of classes to see if I have any hidden interests. I plan to keep up with a counselor so I can have a set goal and or be working and changing one. One of the obstacles I will most likely face is a lack of time. I will be busy with work and school because classes will get harder as I continue. I will devote more time to studies and make sure to ask any question that I might have.If I don't understand something I will make sure to find a torturer. But mostly I will accomplish this goal by staying devoted.

    1. One of the best tools I found was tracking my educational progress in small increments. The big picture of a graduate degree can become intimidating when you look at the massive amount of work to do. By taking it one class and one assignment at a time, I found it was easier to manage the stress and perform at a higher level. Making time for family and friends was essential to being able to deal with deadlines and roadblocks. Although it seems like there are never enough hours in the day, you can do anything you really want. Good luck!!

    2. I can completely relate to you and the goals that you want to accomplish like earning a degree and devoting more time to school. One of my fears while attending college is finding a degree that will satisfy me in the long run. I have never been quite certain about what I am passionate about, so it has been something I have been struggling with, but I know that still have a lot of time to figure it out. Staying devoted to school and making time for studies will lead us to the goals we want to accomplish.

    3. It is important that the career you choose in the future is the career you will always have interest in. I can relate to your problems because I also work, go to school, and I also play soccer, so managing time is pretty difficult. I have to plan around everything and I do this by keeping a planner. This tool may be useful to you since you also have a lot on your plate. Your goals are very achievable and I know you can do it. Good luck with your lifetime goals and achievements just stay devoted to school.

  4. One of my lifetime goals has been to learn to play the guitar. I have never taken lessons; rather I am self-teaching and learning by trial and error. I have no lofty goals of being in a band. I just want to learn how to play some of the music I enjoy. With the rigors of work, school, and family my time available to practice can be limited at time. What I find is that I go through periods where I practice often and seem to make progress but then I will go weeks without playing and I seem digress. I am trying to incorporate better time management that will allow me to practice more often, even if it is for less time. I am also hoping to establish milestones, which will allow me to document progress made. I used this process during my education and took it one class at time, so I did not become overwhelmed by the journey.

    1. I have always wanted to learn to play the guitar. Many years ago I took a beginning class and it was really hard. I think that a lot of people in the class already had some experience with music and I did not. It quickly became obvious to me that you have to practice every day and it is very time consuming. It turned out not to be for me, but I still have that desire to play. Good luck with your commitment to play.

    2. I play guitar. Also, for some of the same reasons that you started to learn how to play. I wanted to learn to play the music I enjoyed. When I first started playing close to 6 years ago it felt like the hardest thing I could have decided to try. But, I got an inexpensive guitar, took a few lessons and then taught myself from there. As cliche as this sounds I would say to practice, practice, practice. I would play songs for my mom that I had just learned off of a website and I'm sure it probably sounded terrible in the beginning but the more I played for her and showed other people what I had learned it came at ease. Even if it's for 10 minutes. I agree with Stephanie. It's really time consuming but it's also a really rewarding feeling when you learn a song or new chord. I would say to stick with it

    3. Right on Ed!!!
In my opinion, this is a fantastic goal! There are so many artists who are self taught. For some of us that is the only means to learn. I believe that we are happiest when we feel creative. I don't have any proof of that only the experiences I have felt when I accomplished a goal that required me to be creative. One of my first memories of that feeling was in kindergarten. I was asked to finger-paint what I wanted to be when I grew up. I painted my version of Superman :-) when I was done I couldn't wait to show it to my parents. Through my life I have felt that same satisfaction from accomplishing creative goals. Keep up the efforts to achieve your lifetime goal. There is every possibility that I may one day be paying admission to see the artist I took an online course with back in 2014!

  5. My lifetime goal is to get my Bachelors of Science in Nursing, and then work in labor and delivery as a registered nurse. I plan on achieving this goal by managing enough study time to be successful as well as making time for other day to day things, like spending time with family and friends. A good time management that has always worked for me is by making a to do list, with my A priorities first! An obstacle that Im facing this month is trying to manage my time between 15 unites and having three very important wedding to attend back to back each weekend. I will face this obstacle by staying on track with studying and doing as much homework as possible in advance, possibly even take my notes with me to study while driving.

    1. I also have a very similar points of your goals. My goal is to get my Bachelors degree too but in English. Exactly same as what you mentioned, I plan on achieving this goal by managing enough study time to be successful and also spend the other time with family and friends. A good time management been and still working well for me because I do organize my time on each thing I work on. I will keep staying on track with studying and doing as much homework just like you and I wish you a good luck with your future career.

    2. I like how you make a to do list with your A priorities first. I actually should do that and focus on my priorities better because just like you I want to get a Bachelors degree. My family and cousins are the ones that I spend most of my time with and that needs to change because having fun can wait until I finish all my assignments and homework.

To be a rich men, I need a great job, in order to get a great job, I need to receive my Bachelors degree in school, in order to receive my Bechelors degree, I need to get a perfect grades and in order to get perfect grades I need to study a lot of hours and managing my study time perfectly. To achieve this goal, I need to organize my time and have no thing distract me. Those things are my main things that I need to focus on in order to achieve my big goal.

    1. I can relate to this goal also except of course I want to be a rich woman. Good job on outlining the steps it will take to be successful with your goal. Now take easy steps to get to the top. I think another good thought would be to maybe have a title of what you would be doing to become a rich man instead of just that title. Maybe something that interests you so not only will you have fun with it but make your millions at the same time. Life doesn't get any better than that. Good luck on your rich man goals, stay focused!

  8. One of my important life time goals is to own my own beauty salon along with my own home. I am going to talk to you about owning my own salon today.I have been successfully already working towards this goal for about 7 years now. Going to school to major in business management is just the next step. I feel it is definitely possible to open my salon without school background, but me personally just would like to do it the right way and have the knowledge to do so while making it happen to lessen the though of not being a successful business owner. I currently work full time in a salon and also am mobile and so a lot of clients in their home or at mine. So you can see how going to school and working 40 hour plus can leave some room for dealing with time management. This will be my first semester taking school full time and I really think I am doing quite well with managing my time. Some ways that I have done this is I truly feel that making yourself a schedule as if it were a job you had to clock in at makes a huge difference. I also keep in the back of my head that school is not forever and the more focused I remain the faster I will be accomplished. Some roadblocks for me with this schedule is I love my money and can rarely say no to it. I also am on a journey of weight loss right now and super focused on getting my body where I want it. I notice that even if I have a scheduled time to do my studies if someone calls/texts me to have their hair done I 100% of the time will do their hair and put my studies aside leaving me cramming at the last minute to do the work. But I got paid and that makes me happy, I once learned from a barbering expo that remember to make sure your clients respect your schedule and I try my hardest to live by that. If they are true loyal clients if you let them know you can't do it for them right now they will understand and reschedule. I have been working on this a lot and also realizing if I can't get a workout in modify the workout or do a harder workout the next day to make up for it. I am learning to put my A priorities first to accomplish my goal and be a successful salon owner.

    3. Wow you sound like a very dedicated to your job and it makes me want to go and get my hair done by you. I think its a great goal that you have to learn more about business before opening a salon. My husband and I started a small business this year and I know that we would be less stressed out if one of us had a college education in business. So many questions arise when you start a small business and it is nice to understand the business world before entering it. I totally understand how you feel about money, I too used to have 2 goals and the one driven by money always won the battle but it sounds like you are working in the right direction to balance your A priorities. Good luck on you future goals you sound like a highly motivated person with a lot of talent and it sounds like you are taking all the steps to get to your goal.

  9. One of my lifetime goals is to get a Bachelors degree in the field I want to have a career in. I don't what to major in just yet but I know I will be able to figure it out soon. I will achieve this goal by spending my time wisely on my education. Rather then going out, watching television, playing video games, or wasting time doing activities that will not help me achieve my goal, I will spend more time focusing on my studies and doing good in my courses so that I can graduate college within a good timeframe to have a job. I spend my time now doing other activities but I really need to focus on my education if I want to be successful in my life. Another goal of mine is to have a family and without education I won't be able to provide for my family and reminding myself of all the good things that will come from having an education motivates me to keep working hard.

After my two years I do look forward to transfer to SDSU, because it does mean I am closer to become a nurse. I can’t wait to start my career, and keep doing well. Studying will always be my number one. Time management tools, I will always keep my whiteboard and be organized with my classes, because that helps me successful. I will always do my schoolwork, before going out, or hanging out with my friends. During the week, I like to stay focused, so I don’t go out during that time. 11. One of my most important lifetime goals is to obtain a healthy body and mind that will support me even in old age. In order to accomplish this goal I will need to stick to a schedule and keep with it, without slacking off. I will also need to adjust my diet to focus more on healthier foods instead of just eating whatever happens to suit my taste that day. In order to ensure that I have no excuses I can use to slack off I will need to set times that are specifically for working towards this goal while also keeping the "Time bandits" at bay. In order to do this I will use the whiteboard on my wall to create a rough schedule that I can follow while allowing breaks in between the tasks so that I do not burn out.

I am a health freak too. I eat at least four piece of fruit a day and vegetables at every meal. Also, I walk about three miles a day. When the weather cools down a little pit I will be back to running three miles. Now, what I do to eat healthier is if I fancy a Carl's Hawaii burger make it at home. It was hard at first but now I got it down. Good Luck.

  13. My lifetime goal is to be a special education teacher. I have been wanting to be a teacher since I was a little girl. Then when I was in the fourth grade, I found out that my passion is special education. Today I work with them five days a week for three hours. I wish that I could work with them more. Every morning when I have work I wake up with a smile on my face because I love my job. I am going to reach my goal by finishing my general education at Cuyamaca College then I am going to transfer to San Diego State or UC San Diego. I have not decided yet. 14. My goal is to make more money to support my growing family. I recently just accomplished one of my goals which was to stay home and spend more quality time with my kids. Now that I have a new goal my A priorities are conflicting because spending time on school cuts into my quality time with my kids. This chapter gave me a lot of insight to priorities my day in order to fit everything in. I have always used schedules but not my prioritizing my week by ABC priorities. I am excited to re create my schedule with these new ideas and also create daily goals of A priorities. I really think I will feel that I have accomplished so much more when I can balance my kids with my academic life. I also enjoyed reading about making things tangible by being realistic. I am guilty of setting unrealistic images of myself in my head that prevent me from doing things or just plain discouraging me. I need to be more realistic about what I can accomplish so that I will get better results.

    1. I get the same feeling when trying new ideas, get pumped up and just want to start right that second. The same thing when hearing about the ABC's. I was in the same conflicting problem with choosing and thinking which was the more important then the others. But looking at the big picture and taking action of the responsibilities at hand is always a good way to go. Plus I kind of learned from first hand of trying to crunch assignments that takes days and doing them in hours because I thought going out was a good idea, yeah that was exhausting and educational.

  15. My goal is to have an education that will allow me to help people who are struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. I have had problems in the past with substances and self-medicating and I think that my experiences and understanding of the process of recovery will be beneficial to others. I am learning how to manage my time to study and go to class while working full time. It seems that my weekends have turned into endless studying and homework. Right now I am pulling A's in all 3 of my class. This payoff is so motivating and is helping me to keep moving forward. I actually write a schedule each week and include any time that I plan to study on it. I find that it is important to follow this schedule and if I have extra time during the week I usually use it to study. I have to write a lot of papers this semester and I am finding that it is helpful to write them in sections, taking breaks whenever necessary.

Keep up what you do and you will be reaching your goals.

  16. Achieving goals might take several plans and steps to be achieved that’s my opinion. The goals I am trying to be successful at are like a challenge to me and that’s like an obstacle to me which need to be solved because it’s like a mystery and it requires time for me. The time I am trying to spend on this challenge needs to be shorted out and involve more people for assistance. I am always patient about it and I don’t put myself at risk or try to hurry, but what I know it takes a quiet of time therefore, to be complete in easy matter and without putting myself into risks.

The time management section really helped me see through the excuses that I would make to get out of doing or finishing assignments. Making a schedule does make a difference and keeps me a little bit more sane. I can admit thought, it is not something I am used to doing but I will make it work. I see here on the blogs that there are many different styles of keeping track, I might try some out and see which one works best. One of the main reasons that this is a life goal of mine because none of my other four siblings have earned a college degree, so I would be the first one in my family to accomplish this and I know my family would be proud of me. The first step in accomplishing this goal is to find a major that fits my interests and take all the right courses and finish college successfully. Some additional steps are to always stay focused and motivated to achieve my goals. I want to be very sure of my major and not change it repeatedly during college and waste my time taking unnecessary classes. One obstacle that stands in the way of completing my goal is being able to move on to a better college and not having the fear of trying to stay there as long as I can but I know I can do anything I put my mind to do and I am confident I will be successful.

People in this world face many life goals every day. My life goals are too graduated from college, so my life is kind of hard because I have fulltime job and school full time. I decided to use a time management which is helping me a lot. I wake up every day and read books before I go to work, then after work I have only 3 hours to do my homework. The time I need is for homework and studying or review back. The more time you have for school the more focused you will got it. Also I need to finish my degree, because it took 4 years to finish college. I am deciding to make a time for school so I will finish school fast maybe will be better for me. I am accomplished it by having job a part -time and school full-time student, so these will helps me to fishing my degree and graduate from college 2 years. The time management is really good to wake up early every day and make time for something important.

  23. One of my lifetime goals is to move out of California and start a family. Within the past couple of years I have realized that the most practical way to do this is to move away for school. I was accepted to a University in Savannah, GA for the Fall 2014 semester but found that for some reson I talked myself out of it; I procrastinated on paperwork, thought I couldnt afford it, and think I was too scared to move across the country to a place I knew not one person. I told myself it wasnt what I wanted and changed my plans. Recently, after months of regretting my decision to stay, I have begun the process of making the move for the Fal 2015 semester. Once I allowed myself to put my families wishes of me staying home aside and all of my other excuses, I began to break up the process into steps which has helped make this a lot easier. I emailed the academic advisor and had my application updated to Fall 2015, I had them put in paperwork to have my major changed from biology to nursing, and now I am planning my college visit/orientation and am in contact with fincial aid advisors. This time around, I am more excited and not as nervous because I feel much more prepared.

    1. See a counselor to plan your courses to match what is required at the University of Savannah. This is a good choice since nursing is so impacted in CA.

  24. One of my lifetime goals is to be a civil engineer. This goal is not very easy to accomplish as i need to study a lot for it. There also is a lot of math in this goal which requires me to make math part of my life. Some of the techniques that i can use to accomplish this goal is by studying harder in math as most of what I am studying now is about math. One technique that i see very useful for me to be good at math is by applying the math problems into my life. For example try to figure out how things work through number.. etc. Another technique i use to be good at math is by giving some time for myself to study everyday for math even if i don't have homework, create numbers in papers and start to look for a solution for them.

  25. One of my lifetime goals is to achieve a bachelors degree. I want to transfer to San Diego State University. I have to keep getting good grades at Cuyamaca and keep working hard. I will try to find time to study. I have to put school ahead of free time. I like hanging out with my friends, but school is more important. I need to talk to my counselor to see what major is best for me. I am not sure about what career I want to do. There is not a career that I have found for my self to take interest in. This is a tough challenge but I am ready for it.

  26. One of my lifetime goals is to finish college and either earn a bachelors degree, or continue my education and get a masters degree. Very little people in my family have finished college, and my family is really motivating me to complete college. If I do earn a degree, my family will be proud of me and I will feel very accomplished and feel happy that I made my family happy and finished. I also know that I want a good, stable job in the future and a major part in that is earning the college degree. I will accomplish my goal by staying focused, and motivate myself by thinking of the future. I know that I will work really hard now to be happy in the future and earn good money, and have a job that I will enjoy having.

  27. One of my lifetime goals is to become content with the person I am: to fix the things I am not satisfied with in myself or to change my mindset to accept what can't be changed. I don't want to live my life looking into the lives of people I deem better off and wishing I were them. I think that to accomplish this goal, I have to really use time management techniques like thinking about my "ABCs" in life and organizing my priorities. This way I will respect myself and the way i choose to spend my time and feel more confident knowing where my priorities lie. This would lead to more personal success and keep me interested in my own life and self

    1. I like your first sentence about becoming content with the person you are and fixing the things that you are not satisfied with.

  28. I have many lifetime goals that I would like to accomplish by the time I pass. But the goal that first comes to mind is to overcome my scheme of procrastination so I can go on to finishing my college degree. As well as overcoming it generally in everyday life to enjoy some things I do everyday. Being on task and straight to the point sounds beneficial. With this class I feel as if I have learned about myself and it is a test of my ability to be punctual. But overall I would love to graduate from Cuyamaca, and then a four-year university onto my career and live a happy, comfortable life.

  29. One of my important lifetime goals is to achieve a personal sense of fulfillment in my career. The first step in accomplishing this goal is to obtain a degree so I can achieve a higher level of satisfaction with my passion for construction. Some additional steps are to make arrangements to save money and to downsize my material possessions to a point that I can be flexible for change when the time comes. I can motivate myself to accomplish this goal by recognizing the sense of satisfaction created by the smaller accomplishments in the long term journey towards the future.
