Chapter 4, Exploring Interests and Values

For this week, choose any two topics below.

What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matches your values.

Comment on an unsuccessful decision you made and how it did not match your values.

Comment on another student's post. Can you add to their comment or raise new questions?

What are your highest interests as described by the Interest Profiler in this chapter?  How do these interests match your career choice or the major you are considering?  Interests include realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional.

Read the following 2 scenarios and comment on one of them. Based on the individual’s values, give your opinion about what would be the best decision.

Scenario 1: What should be my major?

Shawn is twenty years old and has completed two years of college. He has been trying to decide whether to major in engineering or music. He has completed all of his general education requirements as well as several courses in music, math, and physics. As a child, Shawn was interested in science and dreamed of making new inventions. He always took things apart to see how they worked. Math was always easy for Shawn, and he received awards for achievement in science. He also took part in band throughout his school years and learned to play several instruments. As a teenager, he had a garage band and became so interested in playing the piano that he spent two hours a day practicing. Shawn’s dilemma was that he was becoming stressed out trying to do both majors and
no longer had time to do well in both music and engineering. He also wanted to have time to get a part-time job in order to become more independent. Shawn’s top five values are being independent and living on his own, having a secure future, doing interesting work, achieving something important, and being able to relax. Based on his values, what major should Shawn choose?

Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?

Maria is a married mother of two young boys ages five and seven and a part-time college student. Maria and her husband, Juan, are very proud of their Mexican heritage and value their marriage and family. They both think that it is important for Maria to spend time with the children. Maria learned to speak English as a second language and has made sure that her children speak both English and Spanish. While the children are in school, Maria has been attending college part-time with the goal of becoming a teacher’s aide in a class for bilingual children. She has some experience as a teacher’s aide and gets a great deal of satisfaction from helping the children. Juan works in construction, and the family has sacrificed to come up with the money to pay for Maria to attend college. Maria has struggled to earn her associate’s degree and is proud of her accomplishments. She values her education and wants her children to do well in school. Now Maria is considering continuing her education to earn the bachelor’s degree so that she can become a teacher. She would enjoy having her own classroom, loves working with children, and would have a higher income as a teacher than she would as a teacher’s aide. Maria’s husband is concerned that she will spend too much time at college and will not be home for the children. He is also relieved that Maria has finished college and plans to work part-time to supplement the family income while the children are in school. Should Maria continue her education and earn a bachelor’s degree?

  1. My most important value in life is my family and my friends. These people mean the world to me and some of them I have grown up knowing. I am achieving this value by trying to spend time with people through my busy schedule that includes work and school. School and work take up a large portion of my time which leaves me with less time for family and friends. This semester I have been learning how to divide my time. It can be stressful but I am trying to get the hang of it all. By making the time for my loved ones I am staying true to what I value most.

  2. My highest Interests were Investigate, Artistic, and Social. After looking at the careers for this type I found that one of the careers I had been interested in was one of the options. The option was Clinical Psychology. I enjoy Psychology as it is so I was please to look farther into this career. Although, I have yet to chose a major it is nice to know that these test results ended up matching one of my personal interests. Psychology involves helping and listening to others, critical thinking is another big part of it most all of which is of interest to me. At some point in my college career I plan to take a Psychology class to look farther into this career as an option.

  3. Maria should wait a few years before she gets her bachelors degree. Both her and her husband should make a compromise it is important to both of them that their children have good education and family life, but Maria's schooling is also important to her. Maria should wait until her children are more independent before she continues her schooling. Once her children have reached farther maturity and Maria has saved a bit more money she should continue her education for a bachelors degree so she doesn't have to worry as much for her young kids.

  4. My most important value is accepting who I am. As I have had trouble with that in the past and still do presently. It sometimes comes back to linger and It's something I have come realize about myself. I have learned to find that acceptance of myself and I know I am surrounded by people who adore me for me. Once I over come I know it will lead to self-actualization and success. I did consider myself fairly self-actualized on a personality basis, but after this chapter I have come to find there's always more to learn. I'm acting upon this by participating in things that I enjoy and things positive for my future like working, going to school, etc. It's a little form of acceptance and makes me feel accomplished.

  5. My highest interest as described by the Interest Profiler in this chapter was artistic. This was no suprise to me. I absolutely cannot live a day without music- it's empowerment, motivation, brain food, and leaves me with a piece of mind. I also enjoy self-expression whether it be through writing, music, or creating forms. Every aspect of something can be a piece of art, which is a beautiful. Some careers within art I can see myself doing are endless but I do enjoy makeup, clothing, music, photography, composing music, and film (and many more).

  6. In scenario 2, I believe that Maria should in fact continue her education. It gives her a sense of accomplishment and leaves her feeling proud about her success. Happiness in what you do is key to success and also suggests that she should continue what she's doing for herself. It is beneficial not only to herself but down the line can benefit her family in more ways than one including with financial stability as she creates a career for herself and a name as well. With her family being financially at risk and she has been struggling to do well with get her associate's degree but perservered and came out on top. She deserves to better herself and definitely has what it takes to become successor.

  7. Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matches your values.
An important decision I have made is going to college. It matches my values because education is important to me and I believe that education is the key to life success. Another good aspect of my decision is that it shaped my life. Going to college was a critical decision. It shaped my live and my value. Education is one of the important value in my life. I think if you are an educated person you will realize that there are many opportunity in lives to take advantageous of. Having a good education will give me a chance to have a job I want it instead having a job that is uncomfortable.

  8. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?
The most important value in my life is family and school. My family leads me through tough choices. They help me through life. That is why my family is one of the important value. School is also one of my important values because the teachers over there help me learn important educational matter. School can change my future to better one and have great life. These two values can real change my life to a better one so they are my important values in my life. Also my family help me to shape the way I look to this world. For instance, my mom is a person I most value she taught me to look at life in different angles and not only in one. This way I know that I have many opportunities to take advantage of that will help me to achieve my goal.

  9. Should Maria continue her education and earn a bachelor’s degree?
In my opinion, Maria should continue her education so she can have a better job by have a bachelor’s degree. If she like to be a teacher I would like to recommend her to continue the school. Also if she get a bachelor’s degree she will be so happy what she have been done, so her kids will be proud of her and the will start do the same as their mother. She can do this for the kids and have good future and life to them. The higher the degree the better it is, because she can have a job she like with a good salary.

  10. My unsuccessful decision that I have made in my lifetime was taking a break from school. This decision haunts me till this day. Reason behind that is because I decided to take a break from school to get a full time job. Thinking that making money was better than continuing my education was totally a mistake. The amount of endless hours that I spent making this so called "easy life" I planned in my head was a waste. Time that could have been put towards finishing school and doing a career was put on hold. My values were definitely not clear and I did not have a purpose to strive for. Since then I can honestly say that I have matured, and I now know what my values are and what they mean to me. I now have a purpose and meaning to fight for.

    1. Welcome back to school. Taking a break gave you an idea of what the job market is without an education, so it is motivating you to continue your education.

  11. I think that maria should continue with her education and push the limits. By her continuing her education, she would be able show her boys the hard work and sacrifices that were made to provide and make a better life. This might be a bit harsh on the family seeing how things are already tight as they are. But by the time Maria finishes her education possibly after the boys are long gone, she might lose the motivation and heart to continue. If things are hard now, its only going to get worse. She should sit down and talk to her husband and plan things out, from quality time with the kids to all of the family. There might also be an option to get a part-time and go to school. Might be longer, but she will also be able to see her kids grow up and provide for the family.

  12. My most important life value would have to be obtaining financial security while do something I would enjoy if possible. I am currently working towards realizing this valuing e by attending college so my potential job field is widened and I am able to start with a higher pay than if I did not have a college education. While it is not quite as important as obtaining financial security I would also love to be doing something I enjoy, although I have yet to find something that fits the bill. I am also working towards this goal by applying various things that I have learning in this class, such as positive thinking and rewards for completing tasks that I have been assigned. So far I have been fairly successful in keeping my motivation and have even improved on my negative thinking slightly.

  13. My most important life value would be having a strong relationship with my family and being finically stable. Having a strong relationship with my family has helped me get through school and accomplish much more then I ever thought I could! Having a strong relationship with them is awesome to know someone is supporting you 110% through everything, without a sting relationship with my family I wouldnt be nearly motivated as I am today! Being finically stable is something that I also value because knowing you have a career that you love and being able to support yourself I feel like is an awesome feeling.

  14. After reading Shawn's scenario I think that he should pursue and degree in engineering, because he could also have a band as a hobby. I think this because one of his values is that he wants to have a secure future, with music they may not always be work. Another few of his values are doing interesting work and achieving something important as an engineer I feeling like your also doing interesting work with a lot of math involved which stated he was very good at, as for achieving something important wiring as an engineer and playing music in a band I think is achieving something important that you also enjoy!

  15. My most important life value is to be successful, it is something I think I was born wanting. My mother always told me have always been a go getter about my money and even if we are doing great we can always do better. I don't think much has changed because that is still they way my mind works. I enjoy pushing my self and challenging myself in most everything. From a very early age I set goals for myself, sometimes daily goals, weekly, monthly, yearly, and all the way down to where I want to end. I have successfully kept on the right track throughout the years. Although getting back into school was suppose to happen for me awhile back I just tell myself it's ok to get a little off track as long as you soon get back on that track to success.

  16. At this moment, the most important value in my life is getting a college education. I am acting on this value by putting in the effort necessary to get my bachelor’s degree. I am attending all class lectures on time and prepared. To keep from missing any assignments, I am keeping an organized scheduling system. I am making my studies my highest priority when not working. I am saving money to pay my tuition, books and supplies. I am creating short-term goals in school that are more easily accomplished which are also leading to my long-term goal of getting a bachelor’s degree.

  17. A decision that I had mad recently to help me be successful in life is I finally mad the leap to go back to college. As i mentioned before I have always had a goal map mapped out with times of when I want to do things and when I want them to be done by. I was supposed to be a lot further into college than I am now I even had thoughts of oh maybe I wont go back to school because I am already becoming very successful in my career. Then I slapped myself back to reality and I realized when you set your goals stick with them because you put them there for a reason and now I am getting started in school loving it and I won't stop until I finish it all.

  18. I think that Maria should follow her goals and go on with school. I understand the whole you need to be with your kids and be the mother and all that but at the same time as a parent you want to set a good example for your kids and show them what they should be doing when they grown up. I think it is possible to balance school, work, and family along with a number of other things. I think Maria would just have to learn how to manage her time and her family. She could maybe go to school part time while the children are young and as they get older she can do more and more with school seeing as the children will be into there own things. I feel that showing her children though that hard work pays off in the end will help give her children even more respect towards their mother to see what a hard worker she is. Also she will be happier being able to do what she loves and make a good income doing it.

  19. On the subject of whether or not Maria should continue getting her education I believe that there is no concrete answer though I will state what I believe will work out best for her, and her family, in the end. What I think would be for the best is that Maria take a small break from getting her college education in order to get some work experience as a TA as well as banking some of her earnings to soften the blow of her tuition fees. This will allow her to get a better job due to having former teaching experience as well as appease her husband as she helped take a load off his back for a while. In addition to calming her husband down it will allow her to see if she truly wants to continue her education and work as a full time teacher.

  20. My highest interests as described by the Interest Profiler in this chapter were social and investigative. The social interest matches the major I am considering, which is Biology, because the characteristics of that interest are assisting others and promoting learning and personal development. People with social interests prefer to communicate more than to work with objects, machines, or data. Many of the careers that fall under this category were in the medical field, such as chiropractor, dentist, and physical therapist. I actually have been considering these careers, which all work with majoring in biology, so I am more reassured of my options.

  21. I think that Maria should continue school to pursue her Bachelor's degree, but in a few years. Her children are still young, and Juan is right to want her home with them often. When her children are a few years older and less dependent on their mother, then she can continue her education like she never stopped. Also, another option would be taking online classes. Almost every class is offered online and she would be with her kids at the same time as school. Maria should continue, whether she waits, or takes online classes, for better job opportunities and for a better future for her family.

  22. My highest interests described by the interest profiler are realistic, enterprising, and conventional. I was relieved to find out that my profiles all had a career that I have considered. Realistic was by far the highest rated interest for me. It was not surprising to find construction worker as one of the careers I might be interested in, however, I was surprised and relieved to see civil engineer as an option as well. This is the major I am working for. Because I am passionate about the construction industry and would like to expand my knowledge to include the science of the field, I am glad to find that I am on course for a rewarding career.

  23. My most important life value would be having a good health. Having a good health is worth a lot because there would be no point in my life if I am rich or having every thing I want except being healthy. Being health is also very important to me because it always keeps me strong and energize. The most successful decision I made is when I decided to be an English teacher because I used to love English since I was a kid. I would also like to get my college degree to achieve this goal and be proud of my self in the future.

  24. After reading Shawn's scenario, I think that he should degree in engineering, because he seems smart in math. I think being an engineer requires to be a good math solver. The good value that seems related to be an engineer for Shawn is doing interesting work which is very important to be an engineer. in my opinion, music sometimes is hard because it requires some one who is very talented and having a long experience for many instruments. To be a great musical, it requires to be in deep love with specific instrument that may require any person to have long experience with it.

  25. I think its important for Maria to get the degree she wants to prove to her children that hard work pays off and nothing comes easy. Its important to always set a good example to your children. Also, i think Maria will be well at spending time around the house, taking some classes/online classes and making sure everything in her social life is well. I think its important for Maria to finish her degree, so she can show her kids that nothing in life is simple, and you have to get through things to get better. I can relate to her because my father went to college as a second lauguage and into business, he went through struggles going to school, working, taking care of 6 kids, but with the help of my mom he did it! and with Maria, her husband will be proud of her when she finishes class. Maria will set a good example for her children, just as my dad did.

  26. What i learned about this chapter, was I'm i think i will be good at other majors, such as real estate, I've always thought about real estate, but with the economy right now i know it really wasn't the best decision. Also, I would love the medical field, such as nursing and medical assistance, i think these three things are what i would enjoy doing on a daily basics and thats important to me. I want to enjoy work. Another example, my sister is an accountant, and she always says "tomorrow is going to be so much because its tax season" she always tells me I don't feel like I'm ever at work, and i think thats how it is with me, i wouldn't get into something I don't enjoy.

  27. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

The most important value in my life is my friends and family. Without my friends that I know now I don’t know who I would have been if I didn’t meet them my friend are my second family. If I’m stressing out about life I know I can go to my friends and they will calm me down. My family is support of my dreams and they also want me to be successful in life. My family and friends showed me if I go to college I will have a better future.

So I had to make a decision keep looking for a job or go to college. It took me a while to make the decision but on New Year eve of 2013 I decide to go to college and continue my education matches my values because having an education can help achieve your goals in life. I look back on my decision and I’m glad that I am going to college.

  29. Scenario 1: What should be my major?

After reading Shawn scenario what he needs to do is choose between being engineering or music what Shawn needs to figure out what makes him happy. In my opinion I think he should pick engineering because it’s a career and going into to a band it’s hard to get famous but he can make his band a hobby after work. Being an engineer he has a successful future but if he goes in to music he has a fifty/fifty chance for is band to take off.

  30. Scenario 1: What should be my major?

Based on Shawn values, I believe that he should decide on the major of becoming a engineer. Being an engineer is a career that Shawn will have a secure future in and can become financially set. An engineering career will also have him doing interesting things and Shawn will also be doing things for the economy and world around him which is what he is looking for in a job. A career concerning music is not that great of an idea because there is no guarantee of him staying in that career and becoming successful or big in it unless he somehow goes famous. Engineering is by far the better choice.

  31. My highest interests as described by the Interest Profiler are Realistic and Conventional. Realistic means that they are the type of people that like hands on activities and do not really enjoy working with or handling paperwork. A Conventional type of person like following the same set routines and like working with detail and data. These interests match my career choice because they both matched me to the career of being a dentist which is my future career. Being Realistic has hands on activities like a dentist and Conventional follows set routines a a dentist would each day.

  32. Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?

This is a very hard scenario because if Mario chooses to continue her education then it might lead to marriage problem with her husband, Juan. She has already completed her associates degree and she can work part time as a teacher's aide. If it is very important for Juan that Maria spends more time with the children then I would suggest that Maria should work as a teacher's aide, save money, and take care of her children for a couple years and then go back to school to obtain her bachelor's degree. Her children can grow and be able to take care of themselves at home while she attends school again to obtain her bachelor's degree. This is a hard scenario because she has young children and if they can't stay home alone then she would have to hire a babysitter while she focuses her full time in part time work and school.

  33. Comment on a successful decision you have made and how it matches your values.

I believe the most successful decision I have made is to attend college after high school. My older brothers went to college and they are both doing really well. My oldest brother obtained his business administration degree. My second oldest brother is still attending college and he is working online doing marketing. They have motivated me to attend college and make something of myself because I want to gain more knowledge and have a better understanding of the world. It matches my values because I want to be educated, successful, and able to financially take care of my family. I believe college is very important because not only do we gain knowledge but it also opens doors for us to have a better future.

  34. My most important value in my life right now is feeling good about myself. This may seem selfish to people who do not know me, but when I feel good about myself I am able to help others more effectively. During periods of my life when I do not feel good about myself I tend to withdraw and thus reduce my usefulness to others. My life goals revolve around helping those I love reach the dreams they have expressed. Being older than most in this class, my goals may seem misdirected. The days of dreaming for success and wealth are long since gone. Now I just need to focus on doing what is necessary to make life successful at this point. The needs of others outweigh the needs of me.

  35. My highest interests are realistic, investigative, and social. My current position is mechanical repair which fits perfectly with realistic and investigative. My degrees in education and management fit well with the social interest and my desire to be a college professor. I am concerned that my lack of a Ph.D. will not allow me to reach my goal. So for the moment I am taking classes I feel will benefit me, as I continue my work in the mechanical repair field. I would also enjoy working on a military base, as that environment is familiar and meets my realistic interests. Teaching in some capacity on base would be a position I know I could excel in.

    1. You don't need a Ph.D to teach in the area of mechanical repair. It is a much needed field that relies more on professional experience plus the desire to learn how to teach. Maybe courses in teaching would help you to reach your goal faster.

  36. I feel Shawn should focus on the engineering degree. His top five values will require a steady income and a position where his work makes a difference. An engineering degree pays very well and he would have the choice of what field interests him the most. He would not have to give up his musical pursuits, as they would be a good source of relaxation from the engineering classwork. There is nothing saying that Shawn cannot pursue his music as he gets older and becomes a better musician. However, he may lose the chance to get his engineering degree if he picks music at this point in life. The music will always be there, Shawn needs to use the tools he has and get that engineering degree and find a good paying job that needs his abilities and passion.

  37. The most important value in my life would be to educate myself and not waste my time with laziness. So to me I like to keep educating myself everyday by doing researches about things that I don’t know and I try figuring it out at the end of the day even if I can’t I try to ask some people that are professional so that can respond to me. I like to be learning everyday so that I keep my brain cells to be active in addition I learn new things every day. Life will be easier when I try to solve problems faster and in short amount of time.

  38. Successful decision that I have made is working hard every day so that I can make my living goes by without struggling with the budget. To me I work a lot and I find myself that is going well around so that can pay my bills and save some for the future. I like working hard because that keeps me motivated for not being lazy and keeps me think that there is something that must be done to accomplish my living. I think everyone must work hard at this generation so that can be successful. I love working hard with people and that’s one of my motivations.

  39. What are your highest interests as described by the Interest Profiler in this chapter? How do these interests match your career choice or the major you are considering?
My highest interests are social and investigative. I love working with people and helping them in whatever ways possible. I also love working with facts and figuring out solutions to problems. I am majoring in nursing and both of these interests contribute to this. As a nurse I will need to take facts about patients and come up with solutions to their illnesses based on this and past histories. I will also need to work hands on with people and ensure that their stay is as enjoyable as possible and my interaction with them is a huge factor in that.

  40. Based on Shawn's scenario, I think he should major in engineering rather than music. Because his values mainly focus on financial security and independence, engineering is the better choice; there are more job opportunities and it is a growing industry where he will have a better chance of finding a job. Though he is interested in music, it is something that will always be available to him as a hobby. He will always have the opportunity to pick up an instrument and play it, or join another band in his spare time. By choosing engineering, he has the opportunity to work towards something important, have stability, financial security, and also budget time for his music.

My family is the most important reason for me to keep studying because they always supported me to reach this point, now I’m responsible to make them happy. To achieve this goal I’m trying hard to get A’s in all of my classes, be patient and spend time on my homeworks and not give up. A successful decision I made is attending college because it secure me and lead me to be a good person that have goal in life which is to be successful. It matches my values perfectly because in meantime the most valued people in communities are the educated ones and my goal is to be a valued person in the society that can benefit and be beneficial to all kind of people. I would have to say my most important value in my life are my family and my education. My family are always there supporting me every step of the way. They always know when I am under a lot of stress and I do not have to say anything. Well I am a very talkative person so when I am quiet they know something is up. My family has always told me that I need to get an education to live my dreams. When I was 10 years old, I remember going past SDSU and saying that I want to go there. My education has always been really important to me. In school I get A’s, B’s, C’s. I am not that good in school, but one of these days I will get my teaching credential and be a special education teacher.

  44. What are your highest interests as described by the Interest Profiler in this chapter? How do these interests match your career choice or the major you are considering? Interests include realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional.
In the Interest Profiler it said that I was really social and artistic. I have always seen myself the same way. I think that it is good that I am really social because I want to become a special education teacher. Teacher’s need to be able to talk in front of a group of children. One of the things that I cannot wait to do when I become a teacher is be around children all the time and coming home to my kids. Also, talking to the other teachers and the parents of the students. My classroom will be filled with art that is inspiring to the students. Art has always been a part of me. I am a painter myself and my art will be displayed in my classroom. And we will always try to go to art museums.

  45. Based on the individual’s values, give your opinion about what would be the best decision.
I would say that Shawn should go for his lifelong dream and get his degree in engineering. In the long run a degree in engineering will pay more. He can always play his music on the side when he is relaxing. If he wants to live on his own and have a nice life where he is not always worried about where his next pay check is going to come from then the engineering degree is his best pick out of these two. All of his values do not even match up with a degree in music. I would tell him to stay in school and get an engineering degree.

  46. My most important value in life in happiness and love. I want to have a life full of laughter and joy. I like to see the brighter side in a situation and I like to always think positive because being hurt and depressed gets you no where in life. I could not go through life without the love of my family and friends. I feel like the most important thing you can have is love because you know that their are people supporting you and people that will always be their for you and accept you for who you are. My family and friends are who I spend my time with and I make sure that we have an unbreakable bond.

  47. I feel like Shawn should major in engineering. Shawn values having a secure future and majoring in engineering will get him a secure job. Majoring in music can be risky because he wouldn’t know whether or not his band will be successful or whether or not he can get a job right away. Majoring in music gives him fewer job options than majoring in engineering. Shawn also values doing interesting work and based on his interests as a kid, he would find jobs that come from an engineering major interesting. Lastly, another of Shawn’s values is achieving something important. With an engineering major, he can make new inventions useful in everyones lives, or he can make changes that will help the world and better the world.

  48. The decision to quite my job to become a stay at home mom was a successful decision I made based on the value of a good marriage. My husband was a stay at home father for 5 years and was burnt out and wanting to get back into the workforce. I was working in a job that was over demanding and I wanted to spend more time with my children. Valuing my husbands feelings and wanting to be a better mother helped me decide to quite my job and has thus far been successful.

  49. My most important value in life would have to be my family in friends. They mean everything to me, without them I do not know what I would be doing right now. My parents provide for me and my brother and sister help me with my school work. I want to make my family proud my doing good do in school and having a successful career. Without my friends I would not have a social life and hanging out with them keeps my mind off of school. These people help me through good times and bad times. These people are always there for me when I them.

  50. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

My most important value right now is having a good marriage and this year my husband and I started a small business together so that we could spend more time together and with the children. Our lives changed drasticly this year but the ultimate goal was for us to spend more quality time together and find careers that fit our values and personalities. It is important to us as a couple to be happy in our work life in order to be happy together as a family and so the flexibility of our small business has allowed me to further my education for a career that I will be happier in.

  51. Shawn should engineering for his major because he is good at it. He would be financially stable. Shawn could definitely have a successful career in engineering. By picking this major Shawn would be able to fulfill his top 5 values. It is easy for him so he would be stressing about life. Music can be a hobby for him. He can still have music in his life by playing it in his free time. It would be a good story for him to have a talent since he was a kid, and having a successful career off of it.

  52. My most important value to have in life is happiness and being able to accomplish my goals. Currently I am trying to work as hard as I can in school so that I can further my education and find a job that meets all the values I hope to obtain in the future. I feel like once I accomplish certain goals like financial, stability, finding a job that I am passionate about, and having strong relationships with friends and family, it will lead me to happiness. All most people want in life is to be truly happy and do what they love and these are values they hope I can have at one point in my life.

  53. After reading Shawn’s scenario, I believe that he should decide on majoring in engineering rather than music. Based on his values like being independent, having a secure future, and doing interesting work, engineering would be the better career choice for him. He would have a higher chance in becoming successful with this major because there are more jobs available, while the music industry is hard to become successful in. Since he has always been interested in science and has dreamed of making new inventions, he could achieve the goals by pursuing in an engineer major. Overall, engineering is a more ideal career choice to meet Shawn’s values and plus he could always pursue music as a hobby on the side.

  54. My most important value in life is to stay loyal in my life. The reason why this value is important to me is because i don't like to be disappointed from someone that i love, and as a result of that i don't do to others what i would've hated if they did it to me. I try to maintain this value by not lying to the people I am with in matter of business or any kind of situation that needs loyalty. Also another way that I use to make this value in my life is by using the golden rule. The golden rule means to do to others what you wish for the to do for you; therefore, i will try to think of what would my reaction would be if someone does a certain thing that I am planning to do. I will use the golden rule always before I make any action.

  55. Scenario 2: Should Maria continue her education?
I believe that Maria should compromise with her husband. Perhaps she could take a few classes at a time or just an online class that way she is able to work part time and also spend time with her children. Eventually once she saves some money and her kids are older she can continue school at a more accelerated speed. Since she is married with kids the responsible thing to do is to consider her children and her husband in her decision. If she rushes into going back to school without considering her other priorities the stress of juggling everything might eventually cause her to fail.

  56. Two years ago I made the decision to go back to school because I value growth and education. I had a stressful job that would take all of my energy but at the end of the day I would feel unfulfilled. So far despite all of the difficulties I have encountered I am proud of my decision and continue to stand by it. I hope that everything I learn will eventually take my career in a new direction. I enjoy being a student and learning new things every day and I enjoy working towards something.

  57. My most important value is my family relationships. I am acting on this to achieve my life goals by learning from my family members and teaching when I can. I plan to seek out environments in which I can form relationships similar to those I have with family members because I suspect that in doing this I will be more inclined to not let coworkers and bosses down and I will feel more fulfilled in my workplace and life if I am able to work amongst people with whom I form close relationships and make proud.

  58. After reading Shawn's story, I think the best major for him would be to continue on his engineering major and leave the music. AS engineering needs a person with a good math skills and science, Shawn loved math and science ever since he was little and it was his best thing to do at school, and that is all the engineering field needs. For the music, its true that he is good at it too and he loved it during his school years, but engineering to him was more fun to do. Maybe that is not the best choice for him as i don't know what he feels like inside, it is also important to choose a major that he sees himself doing in the future and enjoying himself while doing it.

  59. I recently made the decision to not be completely honest and forward with a family member of mine, and that resulted in my confidence levels being utterly shattered and I now am not so easily trusted by this individual. It is obvious to me that I place a lot of value on my "family relationships", because even being looked at wrong can put me on the defensive and make me feel depressed. Choosing to not be honest with an important person in my life plainly goes against my values and i can tell that this decision has probed counter-productive to my goals because it has pushed me back on the progress I've made gaining confidence and trust amongst my famiy members, and I am having to start over again while feeling discouraged, so of course, I am not being very positive or trying to move in a positive direction.

  60. Yesterday I made the decision to go to a friend's and watch football forgetting all about writing my blogs for the week. I am usually organized and not so forgetful but I was so excited that the Chargers won I completely forgot what was important. I am writing this blog now even though it is late and I wont get credit for it, but I am not comfortable when I start something and don't finish it entirely. This is part of my personality. I like to do things in a particular order and if I don't it bothers me. My bad decision isn't the end of the world but I am really unhappy about it. School is getting harder and I need to focus as much as possible on my classes and doing well.

  61. In scenario #2 I think that Maria should continue with her education. Though it might be a financial hardship for their family now it will pay off in the long run. Maria can always work part-time and go to school too. She can also look into getting financial assistance while she is completing her degree. She has already decided what she likes to do and she already has an AA so it shouldn't be to hard to keep going to school.

  62. What is your most important value in life and how are you acting on this value to achieve your life goals?

My most important value in life is to buy a house and provide a comfortable lifestyle for my son. It is important to me to give him a childhood where we can afford to go on vacations, put him in extracurricular activities, etc. I am working towards achieving this goal my starting college, looking into internships and researching my chosen career path.

  63. What are your highest interests as described by the Interest Profiler in this chapter? How do these interests match your career choice or the major you are considering? Interests include realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional.

My highest interest as described by the Interest Profiler was investigative. This means I like work activities that have to do with ideas and thinking more than with physical activity. I also like to search for facts and figure out problems mentally rather than to persuade or lead people. This result made me very happy because the career I have decided to pursue as a Veterinarian was listed in the "matching job titles".

  64. In scenario number one, I think that Shawn should continue his college education with a degree in engineering. If he would like to have a secure future, a career in music may not be the best route. He also did very well in math and science, which shows he would succeed in engineering. He can still keep his passion for music in his life as a hobby. It is not impossible to be successful with a career in music, but it is risky and if he wants to be successful and secure I think that he should settle on engineering.
